Somewhere on here I thought there was some discussion of adding coconut oil to the diet. Anyone doing it? And what's your procedure?

I give mine about 1/2 teaspoon once to twice a week. I either add it to her food or let her lick it off the spoon. The other days I add a squirt or two of Grizzly salmon oil to her food. She doesn't seem to mind the salmon oil, but she really, really, really digs the coconut oil.

I've read that you can give them a teaspoon every day, but I haven't gone that route yet. I do know that if you give them too much at one time they're apt to get some cannon butt, so be careful and go slow.

I give Buster and Ruggles a half spoon of coconut oil 3 - 4 times a week. They lick it right out of a spoon. It helps their coats stay nice and shiny!

I've done salmon oil and now I'm doing coconut oil because I have a large container of it. I've read that you should start with 1/4 teaspoon and then build up over several weeks to more.

I have not used it, but I know the Fromm puppy food has some good oils in it and my dog's coat is pretty shiny!

Dad turbodave - did you find some coconut oil yet and if so, have you started using it?

Yes, found some at food city and just started using it. I'm doing 1/2tspn once a week to start. Don't want him to get a case of thunder butt! :D

Went to WalMart and saw this so i bought some. Would this be the correct one to use. Wild Oats organic extra virgin coconut oil. Says unrefined and expeller pressed. Ingredients has 100% organic coconut oil and contains tree nuts(coconut). It is in a solid form and melts to the touch.I will start with a 1/4 teaspoon a day mixed in to her Fromm puppy.

Yup, kpromero. That'll be perfect. I swear, after a few days on it, Bisou's fur felt like bunny fur.

We're now up to doing it every day. Not sure if it's overkill or not, but we do salmon oil in the morning, along with spirulina mixed in with kefir, and then coconut oil and a little bit of raw honey in the evening with dinner. No itching, no scratching, lovely breath, soft fur, and no Frito feet.

Thanks KimB3384. I will start with 1/4 teaspoon a day since she is 10 weeks old and just hit 5 lbs.

Kim how much Kefir do you give each time?

mrshanson, I am terrible with measurements. It's probably why I'm terrible in the kitchen! Anyway, I typically eyeball it and just cover the bottom of her bowl. If I had to guess I would say it's about 1 oz., and sometimes close to 2 oz.

FWIW, I have a terrible time getting plain kefir now, but I can easily get my hands on goat milk (yeah, I don't get it, either). I've been giving her the same amount and she's doing fine. I've read some things online that say goat milk is even more magical than kefir, but it's the interwebz and the posts I read were probably made by goat farmers, so who really knows? Kinda just throwing that out there to let you know that the dosage is the same if you need to or want to try it out. It's actually supposed to be fabulous for allergies.

I give Hudson a little ramekin of plain kefir before dinner. For us it's far from an exact measurement but he really loves it!

Where did you find your salmon oil? Do you give an additional omega 3 as well?

Depending on how much stuff I have to order I either get it from Amazon or on Chewy. I get the smallest container of Grizzly for dogs so that it doesn't go bad. I don't officially give any other omega 3, but I recently discovered dried Australian sardines and will give one of those one or two days a week. They stink like crazy, but the dog loves them!

We add coconut oil to Mo's food few times a week. When we do that, he really likes the taste and the bowl is always licked shiny :)

I'm going to start adding it to my pups' food. They already get almost a 1/2 tsp of fish oil at dinner, but after the fish oil runs out I'll start on the coconut.

My pet sitter just came over for a visit (she used to work in a vet hospital as an assistant), and she said for Penelope's paws I could rub some coconut oil on them too to ease the redness, as it has antibiotic properties. (I've already switched her food over to a different protein/grain free type...have to wait a couple of weeks to see if it makes a difference or not)

I'll start with the 1/4 tsp also, then work up to a 1/2.

Mine eat it, and I use it after baths on their pads and noses.
