So every year my frenchie gets vaccinated and he is 4 years old now. Last week he got his anual vaccination. He is fine and had no reaction to it up until yesterday. This is 6 days after his injection. He has a massive bump. Its very firm. Its where he was injected. So i took him into the vet and they did a test. My vet said the lump could be a vaccine reaction(which he gets the same reaction every year with a small bump though). But the thing is, the lump has bacteria in it, which caused it to be so big and firm. My vet gave him antibiotics to take for the next 10 days. Has anyone experienced a lump that has bacteria like this from a vaccination? Hes behaving like normal. He's not in pain and eating fine. And still very active.

In animals it's not uncommon, cause you think about it when us humans get vaccinated, they cleanse our skin with alcohol to kill off any bacteria present and while some vet's office will dump some alcohol in the fur most do not and just give the vaccine. Any bacteria on the skin can then be introduced to an area where it shouldn't be but can prosper in. The large lump is prob caused by the bacteria and the inflammation of the immune system to try and get rid of it could also be buildup of pus. Is the lump firm. warm to the touch and is it intact or has it opened and started draining? Unless it's some form of resistant bacterial a wide spectrum antibiotic should take care of the issue. sometimes warm compresses can help as well. I would just keep an eye on it and make sure the Frenchie is getting the antibiotics everyday as prescribed until they are all gone.

I'm sorry to hear this. I hope that he starts to respond to the antibiotic very soon. Vaccinations are one of those things that I go back and forth on. We have a Chi who is 13 and I am opting out on having his distemper and parvo shots because I figure he has enough built up immunity by now. Have done the same with our frenchie, but now I am starting to wonder if I am doing the right thing, especially if we take him to the park where other dogs have been. Also had planned not to have them get the rabies vaccination, however, it is required in NYS and our vet is giving us shi! about it. Had titers done on both but it doesn't satisfy the legal requirement. Not sure what I am going to do because the vet won't see them unless they have their rabies shots. Good luck to you!

Thanks so much for your response! That makes alot of sense. The lump is firm and still intact. Not warm or anything. You can just feel there is a lump there. Yesterday the vet gave him some antibiotics that he needs to take for the next 10 days :)

Thank you so much! Xx . That's the same for me, i am quite skeptical about the vaccinations because of all the reaction stories i read online but at the same time i am also scared of my frenchie catching anything. My boy usually gets the c5 vaccine every year and he responds well to it, no severe reactions but just this year his lump is a little larger and firmer so i was quite worried. Have your babies ever had a reaction to any of the vaccines? I hope you figure things out soon and do what you know is best for your chi and your frenchie!

What shot was it? You could get vet to agree he should no long get it due to reactions. Ask.. worse they will do is say no

I’m on the fence and doing alot of reading about shots… Cheli is 13 and I got the‘waiver’ from our vet— no more for him. But we have an almost two year old.. and I’m leaning toward rabies only and that is only because it’s the law where I live. We will see what our vet says when the time comes if they will refuse to see him or not… I don’t think they will but never know
