So, new trick Bentley has learned today.
At only three months he's jumping and opening doors. He's getting around 4 foot vertical. Enough to pull my girlfriends hair as she is standing normally (and her hair isn't that long).
Can't believe at 3 months he's already learned how to open doors. Going to have to figure something out to keep him out of certain areas. o_O

Actually turning the handle? WOW! Cheli will paw or push a door open that is not latched, but not actually turn a handle

Yeah. We have the lever type handles and he's jumping and pulling the handle down to open the door.

Oh geez I would scream.

You definitely need to train out of jumping. Horrible habit, and as you see, now causing actual problems.

Keep reinforcing the "no jump" rule.

Good luck! That's crazy!

Bentley you crazy boy stop that! [emoji173]️

We have lever handles also. Both dogs have opened doors by jumping and hitting the handle. We actively discourage that behavior! They have also opened a heavy pocket door when they were wrestling against it.

I don't even know where he learned it from. I'm trying to keep him off of things but I don't want him to stop jumping. I want him to feel freedom but know the limits of what he should and shouldn't do.
I think I may have to put him in some classes in the near future because he has gotten more mischievous and I think sometimes he knows he's doing the wrong thing and still does it anyways. I have kinda let a few things slide saying "he's a puppy, he'll learn". But I guess the reinforcement currently being used isn't working as well as I had hoped. Frenchies are stubborn. Haha

Right I mean anything is fine in moderation. Maybe put him in agility classes, so that its structured activity, instead of just little crazy frenchie jumping wherever! ;)

I hate to laugh but I'm just picturing a little Frenchie launching himself at the handles and all the trouble he can get himself into, especially with his smug looking profile photo... :ashamed: I don't have much experience with dogs jumping (other than on people) but I wish you the best of luck in your training!

Henri will paw open a gate if it's not latched, but none of them can open a door. You might have to change out the door handles to the round ones. :)

Maybe you can just lock the screen so the handle turning won't amount to anything and Bentley will leave it alone (if you're lucky).

Wow! Can't believe he is actually opening the door by the handle. Jake will head butt a door and push it open if it's not latched all the way, but that's about it. Hope you don't have that type of handle on the front door. Yikes.

My boys are super LAZY....they walk up to the door and just scratch once and look at me. then if I don't get up fast enough for them they scratch more forcefully. I get up and open the door because they are always asking to go outside and that means potty time so I play butler. But, we do have a doggie door too. :) That's funny that he opens doors. They are smart!

I'm not just talking exterior doors. I'm talking interior doors too. He can now basically go wherever he wants.

Silly Bentley! He's a very smart boy. Wally would only try to run through the door. He's 'special' that way. :D

I don't have any advice but I do wish you luck in training him.

Bentley does that as well. He runs head first into doors, cabinets, etc. he doesn't do it as much now as he knocked himself out twice in the past. I think that somewhat deterred him.

Frenchies are smart! Can't believe they're ranked so low at the 'Smartest dogs' ranking.
Maybe because they are only smart when they want to be .. like teaching themselves shortcut to get up on the dining table or how to escape their playpen :D

I honestly think it's because they are more "funny" and "clown dogs" that they get the reputation of being "dumb"... They can become service dogs and therapy dogs just like labs and poodles so their big ol' heads hold in plenty of knowledge [emoji39]

So glad my dogs don't do any of those things when it comes to doors or cabinets.

Isabelle won't even paw one open if it's cracked but I think that's a mix of : she's a spoiled prima donna & she is told to sit at every door before I open it.

To go outside she sits, even if we aren't getting a leash on.

To come upstairs to bed she sits, she gets REALLY excited to come to bed LOL so she needs to settle her mind first.

To get in the car she sits...

Titan not so much but I try to instill this rule for outside, but I'm usually carrying him and then let him run back to the house and wait at the door. The most he's ever done to the door was stand up to look really giant and let out a pitiful bark at my MIL. Which we all cracked up & he walked away defeated.

They are smart. Wally has learned all of Uma's tricks but he's got what I call the 5 second rule. He always takes 5 seconds before he will do anything. He likes to mull it over for a while. lol!

Moses is kinda obsessed with closed doors. He always wants to enter, each door, during our walks, anywhere. He has not figured out how to open them with paw. Sometimes he gets lucky when pushing, but generally doors remain a mystery to him :)
