I'll be going to pick up my new little guy next weekend and I'm looking for any tips that may help on the ride home. It's a 4 hour drive and I'm hoping he sleeps a lot. Anything to make the ride less stressful?
He will probably want to be held. I'd bring a crate for him, a blanket, a nylabone to chew, and water to drink. Also, don't stop to potty him at a public rest stop. He hasn't been vaccinated yet so find a safe place to stop where everyone else and their dog doesn't.
He should do fine as they do like car rides, but will be a little nervous because you are new to him and he is in a new environment. Bring a crate, towels or blanket, plus plenty of paper towels and some plastic grocery bags to put poop in until you can get to a trash container, water to drink, and a toy or two. He should sleep most of the way, so it should be a nice ride home.
I drove 3+ hours to get both of my dogs and neither of them had any issues on the drive home. I was alone when I got Wally so I kept the crate on the passenger seat facing me so he would be safe in the crate but could see me in case he got nervous. Turns out he wasn't nervous at all, he slept most of the time. He was thirsty though so make sure you bring water with you.
I sat in the backseat with Jax when we picked him. He was a little maniac jumping all over me and playing. Unfortunately after that ride, he started to get car sick and he now hates being in the car.
I had a 2 1/2 hour ride home when I picked up my little miss. We took blankets,a crate and water. My son held her for most of the ride and she slept. She did poop in the crate the short while we had her in there, so bring paper towels and things to clean up. She was great on that car ride and every one since. She loves the car! Goes to work with my husband every day and runs to the car waiting to be picked up so she can get in. Good luck picking up your new baby.
We had a six hour drive home when we picked up Bisou. She stayed in my lap the entire time, which was (mostly) great! She was four months old so she didn't fit in my lap quite as well as an 8-week puppy would, but she did just fine!
The gang has you covered.... we had a 5 hour ride for our new guy .. we have a mini0van so we took out a seat and placed toys, water bowl and blankets on the floor for him and his brother to bond on the ride home. And, the b/f sat in the back with them to make sure everything was good during the ride.
