While researching the French Bulldog breed, I had read that Frenchies are like potato chips, you can't just have one. I had determined, though, that I only wanted one dog and that was final...until we got Daisy. She is so awesome. My husband keeps throwing out hints about a second one so now I am considering it. We really love the breed.

For those of you that went from one Frenchie to two, why did you get the second one? How long did you wait until you got the second one? Is two better than one? Do they entertain each other? Is it twice as much work? Should they be closer or farther apart? Same sex or opposite? (I won't be breeding, they will just be pets.) Should one be potty trained before getting the second or should I put the work in now to potty train two and then be done?

I think that is all for now. Thanks everyone!!

All of these things are totally subjective
However I can tell you how it was for us....
We also thought we only wanted one
We got Banksy may 2015 and aiko December 2015
We are so happy we got another one. They are always playing and cuddling
I personally love having one of each sex for the different dynamics they add to our family
And for potty training it doesn't really matter.. they either learn together or the other follows the others lead. All works out the same in the end

We only have one but can't wait until we can have two!

We got the second one because Jake loved playing with other dogs so much. We got Jake in March 2013 and Stella in December 2013.
I'm not sure if two is better than one. We certainly love them both but I think it depends on the personality and temperment of the dog.
I wouldn't say it is twice as much work, but twice the cost. I always figured if I have to clean up after one dog I might as well clean up after two. If I have to walk one, I might as well walk two.
I personally wouldn't have them too far apart in age. I wanted a playmate for Jake so that's why they are only 10 mos apart.
I have always had opposite sex dogs just to limit the chances of a conflict.
I would definitely potty train the 1st one before you get the 2nd. The puppy will more than likely want to do whatever the older dog does.

Good luck with your decision!:)

Yes I forgot to say I do not think it's twice the work but it is twice the cost. I guess in a way it's more work for me now because aiko is still training and I've been through that already with banksy but she is worth it.

We had an elderly Boxer who was an only dog because we'd lost our other beloved elderly Boxer. We were all sad for a long time and then our dear friends asked if we wanted to become guardians to our first Frenchie, Marie Laveau. She adored playing with her big "brother" and he was very lovely with her and they slept together and kept each other company. When we lost him, there were a few months before we started noticing that she was very clingy and sad. It was in the summer so she couldn't go for rides much or anything so we decided it would be great if she had a companion so we started looking for another Frenchie but our dear friends (they breed competition Frenchies) asked if we wanted to be guardians to a male Frenchie who was being attacked pretty badly by the alpha in their home. We said, of course, yes.

At first, Marie Laveau didn't care for him and she'd completely ignore him unless he had a snack. Then...she'd take it and poor Zulu would let her. Now they are inseparable and are complete snuggle buddies. I was worried for a couple of weeks but I'm glad we stayed the course.

Our plan initially was to have only one Frenchie, but after around year and a half, we got another one :D Not once we have regretted our decision. We have two boys.
Two is great to have and they have so much fun together and come up with the weirdest things to do. So much fun to just watch them play.
Our reasoning for the second was mainly to have a friend for Moses. He loves playing with other dogs, but there wasn't that many in our neighbourhood socialised well enough, so many of his dog friends lived further away.

Like said above, if you feel financially secured to support two Frienchies...just go for it

We already had a dog when we got Wally but when our Boston is no longer around we'll get another friend for Wally for sure. They are very social dogs and he has never lived alone before, he'll need the company.

Jakeyjake, I'll take Stella if you want.

:D

We pick up our new one next week. They are a year apart (Hudson born 9/2013, new one born 10/2014). We are getting a second one because Hudson is bored and lonely. We lived in an apartment complex with four frenchies in our building for the first year and a half of his life and when we moved to a house with no dog neighbors he struggled to adjust. Hudson loves other dogs and for us having two is half the work because they entertain each other. We found this out while dog sitting another Frenchie for extended periods of time. Same sex for us, both boys. And they'll both be potty trained.

I know :( we have tried!! But his dad is still trying to get a second one.

The place we are getting the new one from interviewed us like we were adopting a child! Makes me feel good that they're in it for the best home possible.

Two are always better than one, and really no more work. Male, female usually get along better, but the same sex can get along fine as well. We currently have 5, 4 female and one male. They get along fine. I think when you only have one, they get too lonely.
