Hello,

I do not have a Frenchie... yet (currently renting from a landlord who doesn't allow pets in his unit :() But I have purchased an apartment that does allow dogs and the second I move in I am getting a Frenchie (maybe a month or 2 after ;)). I have heard that they are good "apartment dogs" so I just wanted to hear it from someone first hand. The only thing I am worried about is the barking/whining when we aren't home...

Thanks for any input!

I would agree that they are good apartment dogs as they only need minimal exercise, but at least daily walks. My two were not whiny or yappy at all. Frenchies in general are not barkers unless they are alerting you of something. Are you getting a puppy or an adult? How long would the pup be alone on a given day?

Agreed. The only time Radar barks is against the dreaded vacuum cleaner and he never whines. I also agree with not letting a puppy left alone for too many hours. I live in an apartment and he's great, but I also go home for lunch and straight after work.

I would probably getting a puppy. I work all day but live 10 minutes from work so I would go home at lunch every day. I am glad that what I heard is true!

Frenchies will do fine in an apartment, and as others have said, they are usually not barkers, but as pups, they will whine and may bark some, but not usually.

Hudson has lived in an apartment since we picked him up. He also only really barks at the vacuum or if one of his toys gets stuck under a piece of furniture, otherwise he's really quiet minus aside from the usual "Frenchie talk" when we are home and he's feeling sassy. He was always quiet when crated.

Since we don't have a yard we go on many walks a day, which also helps since it tires them out and a sleepy dog is a good dog! I also really love having a grass patch out on my balcony for him.

They really are great apartment dogs as long as you take them out a lot and keep them plenty entertained, especially when they're puppies.

As long as you don't make a big fuss when you leave the apartment and come back your Frenchie will learn to be calm when you are not home. Good luck and I can't wait to see the pup!!

Hi Alyssa and welcome! Good luck on your search. I agree with everyone in that Frenchies are usually very quiet. We have 3, and Gidget nor Olivia bark unless there is a dog on TV, someone comes to the door, etc. Wilson, however, is deaf and he does bark. He barks if I am going from one room to another... kind of like, wait for me. Not a yap yap yap type thing, just one quick 'ruff'.

Keep us posted!

:welcome3: to FBN.... best of luck on your search for your new baby and the move to your new home.

My guy, Cheli, does not bark unless he is playing, so I am not much help.

Bisou has been very happy in our apartment along with our other dog, a shepherd mix. When Bisou was younger, we confined her to her kennel and then to the kitchen when we weren't home (which wasn't very often since my fiance works from home) and we never had any issues. At first, she whined a little bit when mama left her alone, but it didn't take long for her to realize she wasn't going to get me to come back by doing so. For you, it may be the same, but with some training you won't have a pup with separation anxiety. It's all about training! Now that Bisou is older, we leave her out with Shasta when we're gone. We're not sure what they do when we're gone, but it's never anything too crazy because the apartment looks just the way it did when we left! They do like to bark a bit when they play together, so they may bark while we're gone but not in an obnoxious-bark-all-day kind of way.

The only thing I may advise against is getting a young puppy if you will be working all day and away from your baby. When they're little, their bladders are extremely small and they must eliminate every 2 hours or so. Bisou was 4 months when we got her and even then we needed to let her out every 3 hours. If your puppy has too many accidents while you're away at work, it will quickly learn that pottying inside the house is totally fine and it'll be a nightmare later trying to break him/her of this habit. I'd maybe shoot for an older puppy or a rescue... just my two cents! :)

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the comments. I am hoping to adopt a Frenchie from a rescue society in my city so it may or may not be a puppy. As you can tell I am overly excited to get one as I don't move into my new apartment until 2016 but it's never too early to start your research right? My pups growing up were always trained on pee pads so I am sure I will do the same if I do happen to get a puppy :)
