Hello everyone :) My family and I have been looking into French Bulldogs for a while now and we feel that we are ready to make the commitment to having a happy and healthy frenchie. I am completely aware of all the potential health problems that this breed comes with, and I just wanted official word from actual frenchie owners on how common these illnesses are in the breed, and how simple/difficult it is to avoid most of them. I have never owned my own dog but I have cared for and looked after a few dogs for people. Also, my family and I would be loving owners, without a doubt, and would be willing to give our frenchie puppy the best home it can possibly have, but I just wanted owners' facts and opinions on the question I have asked. Thanks :)

I can't say how often the problems they are prone to show up, but you can reduce the chance of those issues by buying from a reputable breeder. Toward the bottom of this page starting with "I'd like to buy a French Bulldog from a breeder, but I'm not sure what to look for or what to avoid" you will find some information to help you... French Bulldog Rescue Network :: Facts & Info .

Frenchies are definitely a great, fun breed! They have the silliest personalities and will have you laughing and smiling every day. One potential issue to know of is allergies. Jax will be 2 in April and we discovered he has multiple environmental allergies (grass, trees, shrubs, weeds, everything green) and is on bi-weekly allergy shots. There can also be food allergies and intolerances.

Thanks for the replies so far :)
And Cbrugs, I was planning to name my male frenchie (if I get a male) Jax as well!

Frenchys are little clowns with big personalities. Maple makes me laugh every day, she is so silly :)

I am very fortunate; my girl is absolutely healthy. No breathing issues, back problems ,allergies, food sensitivities..None!
I am in contact with my girl's litter mates and so far they have all been healthy.

Definitely make sure the dogs parents are health checked. But its not all about genetics.
Lots of it has to do with environmental factors, vaccines, diet, medication etc etc.
One cannot change their DNA/Genes but they can control the Epigenome which decides what cells to turn on /off and what a whether a cell is going to be healthy or sick. And the Epigenome is highly influenceable by diet and environmental factors :)

Welcome!! I too am lucky that Wally does not have any allergies or other health issues. He's such a clown and is so much fun to be around. You will love having a little Frenchie in your family.

Welcome! There is an informative article on this forum under Frenchie Info. entitled French BD buying tips.
Both of my frenchies have allergies, one is worse than the other. They are great companions and will not tolerate being ignored. They are not big barkers, but will alert you when someone is at the door, etc. I absolutely love this breed. Puppies take a lot of patience and consistency so don't get discouraged. Good luck on finding your new family member.

:welcome3:

I have an almost 4 yr old that had a rough start with a rectal prolapse due to stress (we adopted him at 8 months) he also had to have palate surgery and nares widened when he was 2 yrs old. he also has allergies, but i do not do any shots, I give benedryl once sometimes twice a day and I wipe him with a coll wash cloth when he comes in from being outside to help lessen the impact.

They are total clowns and LOVE to be with their humans

I agree with all of the above... clowns, BIG personalities, silly, etc. Fortunately, our 3 do not seem to be bothered by allergies, either environmental or food. I home cook for ours and they also eat Blue Buffalo. We haven't had any big medical issues other than when we brought Wilson home he had passive regurgitation issues. Very scary, but we got him to Va Tech immediately and when they determined it wasn't a congenital defect, treated the symptoms. After being on meds for about 3 months, one of which was Nexium, he got past that. I truly believe being the runt, he just didn't have everything developed enough to keep it in his tummy. Oh, and he is unilaterally deaf too. That being said.... great dogs!

I have to laugh Jakeyjake b/c Wilson in our barker. Oh well, 1 out of 3 ain't bad, right?

:smileywelcome: to you. You have received some great advice here, the most important is to research and check references on the breeder. Make sure they breed for health and temperament.

Welcome to the site, and you will love your little Frenchie. They are a fun breed and as long as you get your baby from a reputable breeder, the chance of them having health problems goes way down. We have 5 and they are all healthy and no problems. JLO's allergies will flair up every once in awhile and we just give her an allergy pill and she is OK.

Hi there, getting a frenchie was the best thing I ever did. Billy is nine months old so I can't comment on illnesses I'm afraid. Since we have had billy we have been in a regular routine of cleaning his ears, eyes/face wrinkles and teeth so he is used to this happening. He doesn't mind it at all now and keeps him all clean. Johnsons Diamond eyes is really good and we get toothpaste from the vet, liver flavour. We also took billy to a puppy class, again through our vets, It worked wonders for us as billy was our first puppy, so we got lots of advice and help.

He is coming on really well and is turning into a lovely loyal companion.

I hope this has been slightly helpful, I'm still learning a lot my self but I wish you all the luck in the world with your new family member. Can't wait to see the photos!!!
