Frankie is 8 months old now. He's very friendly and happy to see everyone. But once he sees someone, I cannot get him to settle down. I'm thinking that he's still a young guy and I shouldn't worry about it. On the other hand, I wonder if I'm being to lenient and should try something else in his training.

thanks

Yes... what training have you used? Frenchie tend to LOVE humans so it can be a tough setting for them.... we use nothing in life is free to keep them aware we are boss and to follow our lead

I haven't done anything special. I just try to be consistent with him. he's fairly obedient when its just us, but as soon as another person or dog catches his eye he is just fixated. Eventually he is simply inconsolable. I'll get down on one knee, and rub him, tell him to calm down, but to no avail.

Loki gets pretty excited when company arrives, too.

We've found that if I hold him for a while when people arrive he is much calmer than when he is on the ground running around greeting everyone.

My bulldog goes insane whenever anyone comes over to the house. When I know someone is coming over, he gets the pinch collar on and I bring him outside to greet the visitors and then we all walk in together. He has to remain on a leash/pinch collar until he calms down and then we drop the leash but keep it on in case we need to grab him. When we don't know someone is coming over (usually delivery of packages) and he sees someone at the door, all hell breaks loose and I try to distract him.

Your guy is still young and just a baby so good to get him trained now. Have you done any obedience classes?

Buster gets excited and rowdy when company comes also. I ask that they not pet him until he calms down. Some people do as I ask, others get down on the floor, ground with him and it is OPEN SEASON!!! I really appreciate people that wait for him to calm down before he gets attention! At least Buster doesn't hump the people on the floor!

Yes!! We tell people not to pet Louie unless he is sitting calmly. Some listen and some don’t. The ones that don’t listen get jumped on.

Same with Wally. I tell them they're on their own if they don't ignore him as I asked.

Daphne greets people while on a leash very calmly. She usually just stands and sits and savors the attention and loves the pats on the head that she gets. If someone comes to the house, she is excited but not a jumper. She will hover until the person sits down and then jumps up on the couch and plops right down on the person's lap and will go to sleep or just wants to be pet. Lest you think I have some miracle pooch...she is a nightmare in many other ways (like if she sees another dog in real life or on tv). Daphne will become psycho. She was doing so much better for a while but it has just gone down hill. There are too many people in our immediate area that keep their dogs off leash and they just run up to approach us on our leashed walk and it freaks her out. Totally reactive dog now and it makes me sad.

As far as your experience with Frankie...he IS young. I would simply echo what others have suggested and try your best to ask people not to give attention until he settles down. Find a treat that Frankie considers high value and doesn't receive often, and reward him with it when his behavior is to your liking. My Frenchie is very eager to please and she will do anything I ask for one of her special treats.
