Hi,
I know it’s orobably been asked a thousand times but can I take my puppy out into the garden? He is 3days into his 2nd vaccination and he is desperate to follow my other dog outside. Only worry I have is the risk of rats/foxes brininging any germs into the garden?

What did the vet recommend?

He said to wait a week, but other people have said your own garden is fine but I can’t see how this true given we don’t know what passes through our gardens day/night?

If you can set or gate of a section for him that you know the night time visitors don’t come to, you should be fine. Or leash him and stay in one area with him... that is what we did with Lambeau till he got his last shot

I got all the puppy shots for Gus and my vet said (when I asked him after the 2nd round) that it was fine to take him out and around other dogs in the neighborhood, etc. He felt like the chances of developing social issues were bigger than the chance of Gus picking up something. I never restricted Gus going out into the yard, even when I first brought him home at 7 weeks old. However, it sounds like your pup already has dog siblings and is probably getting good socialization. I would think the risk of contracting something is fairly low, but you also need to keep in mind that the parvo vaccine (like the disease itself) is an immune suppressant, so they are often more susceptible to picking up something, or suddenly coming down with worms, right after the vaccine; so, waiting a few more days certainly isn't going to hurt anything.

Parvo can stay in the ground for 8-10 years and I personally won't take a chance until my pup is fully immune. We live where there are deer, fox, cougar, bear, etc. Pavement is safer than grass.

Just so you know, I am old and don't want any "if only we hadn't" in my life anymore. I am extremely careful, but still learning--like the winter before last I let Buster play with the big neighbor dogs in deep snow and he tore his ACLs in both hind legs. We got them fixed, but it was expensive, painful for him and totally avoidable!

I think fox can carry parvo, but not sure about the others. Granted, anything that runs across an area with parvo cab track it. That being said, you have other dogs that could easily track it as well, so if it's there, chances are your puppy is already being exposed. Also, vaccinated dogs can still get the disease. I'd just say don't do anything you aren't comfortable with because if something happens, you'll blame yourself.

Thank you so much for the advice. I do have another a dog, a pug. She is our only dog we have lived in this house for 3 years and the lady before me for 42years and she never had a dog. I guess he will have to wait until Thursday when he can go out. It’s probably not worth it like you say. He won’t mind staying in for a while longer he has no idea what’s out the back door he is just so eager to find out haha. We live in quiet a built up area but I guess that’s not going to stop fox’s or anything coming through our garden and rats, well they say your nerve more than 2 meters from one so that’s probably not a good call either as we have decking and a water foundation in the garden which I know are attractions for like wild life x
