Gizmo has had problems with diarrhea since he was a puppy but it would happen every now and again and usually go away after a few days. The past few months he has had it non stop. We have been to the vet about it a few times but nothing helped. They did a scan and found out that he had some sort of lump but they couldn't tell exactly where and what it was and didn't feel the need to do anything about it. Last Friday I noticed some blood in his diarrhea and took him to the vet. They gave him an antibiotic and scheduled a surgery for Wednesday (2 days ago). Turns out that the 'lump' was actually his kidney. It was so large that it was pressing against his other organs so they had to remove it. I just picked him up from the vets and I'm terrified that he's going to tear his stitches. He has a lot of energy and wants to run around and play all the time. He keeps jumping around. :/ Could this happen or am I just being paranoid? Also, how will the fact that he only has one kidney affect him in the long run?

I apologise for any mistakes that I may have made. English is not my first language.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear he had to have his kidney removed. I'm not sure how that would affect a dog long term. I would discuss it with your vet. With regards to him running around, can you crate him or put him in a x-pen and just take him out periodically to do his business? Has the diarrhea stopped? Good luck.

Oh wow. That is intense! I'm sure you are worried sick!

I agree with above that crating/limiting space will help him not run around. I would also definitely leash him for potty time so there is no way for him to run around out there. Their stitches CAN rip, it's uncommon but it's usually if the owner doesn't follow post-op instructions from the vet following the surgery.

For the long term? I'm not sure that it won't affect him negatively much further down the road if something was to go wrong but also as mentioned above, I would discuss that with your vet. If people can live with one kidney, so can a dog I'd presume.

I hope Gizmo is healed up soon!

Poor baby. I would crate him to keep him from doing too much before he is healed. I would talk to your Veterinarian about long term issues.

Thank You! :)

I will definitely talk to his vet when we go to get his stitches removed.

He's not crate trained so I feel like that would put even more stress on him so I won't do it. I monitor him very closely and make sure he doesn't move around too much so I think he'll be fine.

The diarrhea hasn't complete stopped but it's getting less frequent every day. His stool is also starting to look a lot healthier. The vet said that it will take some time.

I am definitely following all of the instructions I got from the vet so hepefully that won't happen.

I will definitely discuss it with his vet.

He's doing much better everyday. :)

He's doing much better. He has to wear the 'cone of shame' and he isn't too happy about that but he's doing great otherwise. :)

Keep him quiet for sure. You might even get some ace from the vet to help keep him quiet while he heals. I'm so sorry he had surgery. Hope he heals quickly.

I'm so sorry but glad he is doing okay. I think wearing the cone should slow him down. Maybe you can confine him to the kitchen while he is healing and take him out on a leash otherwise. Good luck.
