Hey guys, so last night I gave Gypsy her first trifexis pill(i gave it a day early cuz i saw a flea on her....my old roommate had cats *eyeroll*)....and while she is fine right now.....as of about an hour ago i stumbled across all the horrible info about trifexis. i really had no idea how bad it is. it was what i gave my pug(who my ex now has, i texted him to take him off it) and it always worked so i never had any reason not to use it. i just never thought to research it but wish i had.

Anyyyywaaay....what do y'all recommend in replacement of that for next month? i liked trifexis because it kills fleas in its tracks if they do get them(which is obvious she has some now, sigh) but it's obviously not worth the risks!

I know a lot of people who use Sentinel for flea and heart worm.

We personally use Nexgard for flea and tick prevention (ticks are bad in our area) and heartgard for heart worm prevention.

yes... stay away from Trifexis-- bad stuff.

We have used Sentinel from about 8 yrs without issue for all our bully babies!

We are so lucky here, it is too cold for fleas and mosquitoes to survive! We do have ticks because we have so many deer, we just check our pets regularly.

My vet prescribed advantage multi (=advocate) topical for heartworm and worms ( and fleas ) and k9 advantix topical for flea and ticks. I'm getting a duplicate ingredient for the fleas, but I only need to apply April to November since I live in Canada so it's not year round at least. I think I could get away with using the advantage every 2 months since it takes heartworms at least 3 months to grow, but I like the reassurance of using it monthly in case I didn't apply it properly one month. One time I tried giving my dog oral Sentinel instead of the advantage multi to avoid the duplicate flea ingredient but she threw it up so I haven't tried that again. I plan to try Sentinel again this coming spring but this time I will give half her meal, then the Sentinel then the rest of her meal, and see if she doesn't throw it up.

I use Sentinel for flea and heart worm and have had no issues. Ticks aren't an issue in my area.

I don't use anything on my Frenchies, but am training a service puppy and use Sentinel. I know a lot of people that use Nexgard and Heartgard too.

After 15 years in the veterinary business, I am a big believer of year around heartworm prevention in the area I am in (KY). Personally, I use the Heartgard/Nexgard combination, but only because Frog couldn't stomach the Trifexis the several times we tried. If you use Sentinel, keep in mind that it doesn't kill fleas. It keeps them from reproducing, reducing the population that way. Important thing is to use something, heartworms are real and fleas/tick just plain suck!!

I live in Canada where we have a seriously cold winter, and we still need to protect against heartworm, fleas and ticks. It's recommended here to give flea and in some areas tick prevention products from April-November, and heartworm medications from June to November.
Also, I just checked my back yard the other day after a thaw, and I noticed hundreds of rabbit pellets in my back yard, even though I live in an urban area, so my dogs are at serious risk of picking up parasites on their paws and licking them or getting infected by eating snow with pellets.
