I'm just interested to know what everyone's thoughts are regarding heartworm pills. I currently do give them to my dogs and have been since they were puppies but am curious to find out how many of you give them heartworm pills every month and how many of you don't! I do know that dogs are much more susceptible to getting heartworm depending on the environment they live in. I know it is precautionary but I also can't help but feel like vets are using it as a way to keep business!

We use Sentinel because we have never had any problems with it and it also works for fleas too. We give it year round, because we live in the south and mosquitoes are pretty much year round. Do not ever use Trifexis, it is bad, bad, bad, and has killed many dogs.

I give Sentinel as well on a monthly basis.

I may make a switch to sentinel.. Especially as the weather gets warmer and the fleas start coming out! I currently am giving them heartgaurd..

I give mine Heartgard every month, all year.

No Heartworm pills here ;)
Especially not around this time of year. No mosquito would survive -25 degrees and a meter of snow :D

We are in San Diego and Radar is on Heartguard all year long.

Same here. You can tell who the Canadians are on this forum. :D
LOL yup :D
Even during the summer I dont give heart worm pills because the risk of getting infected here in NS is so low,the risks/side-effects of the pill are way higher.

I used to give heartworm to Uma when she was younger as the vet made it sound like it was life or death but after researching about it I decided to stop. No problems with either of my dogs.

The vets DO make it sound like its life or death.. They make you feel like a bad person if you don't give it to them! I probably will continue giving it to my dogs but I always second guess the necessity of giving it to them every month! :/

It is important if you are in an area with mosquitos. I see many dogs that have heartworms and significant heart damage if they aren't on heartworm preventative. If it's not caught early, it's a sad situation.

I give Sentinel... heartworm and flea preventative

Our vet suggested doing the 6 month shots. He said he has seen a few dogs lately have heartworm while taking the monthly pills.
