Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and I've always been a passive observer until now. Recently Napoleon moved to Madrid (dry climate, hot summers) and I noticed within the first week his lips looked really dry. I put a bit of Snouth Soother on them (great for dry noses, by the way), but I didn't realize the extent of the severity until they started peeling and blistering! I thought it may have to do with the climate, which is a lot drier than where he was before (in the Los Angeles area).

However, the strange part is that his behavior is completely normal: his eating habits and personality are the same. When I touch his lips, he doesn't flinch in pain. I've been putting Neosporin on his lips, and I've been told not to put a "wet" ointment because they don't heal as well, but I don't know how to help him without drying out his lips any further. The drool around the area, when I pull apart his lips are a little stickier, too.

I also just started incorporating Sojos into his meal with his Acana, because he started to refuse dry food alone. But I started feeding him this a week before he left from the US to Spain.

My thoughts are that maybe his lips cracked because we were on the plane and in Madrid, and possibly the live enzymes from Sojos infected his lips? Sorry of that isn't the proper term for the mouth area.

Has anyone else dealt with this? E-mailed my vet back at home, but maybe my fellow Frenchie owners are better :)

I've been trying to find vets in Madrid, but they're basically all out of town for vacation (European life) and resources like Yelp are tremendously unreliable here.

Any suggestions would be awesome!

Thank you!

I would think (human wise) this would be a case of a weakened immune system. Probably from traveling. I'd say to give him some fish oil and doggie vitamin C... Ask the vet about dosage and if that seems appropriate though!

Thanks for a quick reply! I've been feeding him salmon oil since we've landed. You're probably right that he has a weakened immune system. He did get a little altitude sickness when he was in the cabin with me. He also had to go number two. I had to put the pad down and put my feet on the toilet and wait for him to go! Felt bad for the people who had to use the restroom after him...

He's just stressed. Some TLC and nutrition boosts will fix him right up, i'm sure.

:welcome3: best of luck in your new venture!

Seems he is stressed and may just need some time to adjust to the new environment....

Thank you for the article, it was very helpful! I don't think it's his chew toys, but the ones he chews on the most are the kinds with a rope and a rubber ball attached to it. He hasn't been chewing on them a lot lately, just because we take him out to the park where all the dogs can roam leash free!
