Hey everyone. New to the forum and Herr to educate myself the most I can before I make any decisions. I've wanted a frenchie for a long time and I have a few questions as I want to make the right choices, so figured this would be the best place to ask :) My wife and I currently have a 6 year old female chihuahua. A couple concerns of mine would first off be how well do frenchies get along with other dogs(especially of smaller size) and would a male be suitable in this situation? Also, how many of you all work full time jobs and leave your frenchie home alone during the day while you work? Thanks I'm advanced..

:welcome3: to FBN

Frenchies are clowns and as with all dogs, how they behave and get along depends on socialization and the owner being a good leader. Our boy was not socialized as a puppy so he is not good with other dogs, but does great with puppies and people in general -- adults dogs he is all about just being nasty. You always have a better chance of female/male getting along better/easier, but again a good leader can have same gender without issue.

We work ful-time and crate our boys when we are not at home... we also have a pet sitter come at mid-day to give the boys a good run/potty break

best of luck in your search for a new family member

They are are likely to get along if you get a male, but nothing is definite. Frenchies are usually prey good with other dogs, especially if they are socialized. Someone is almost always home with our dog, but I do crate her when we are running errands, and she does fine. She was raised with a crate though so she goes in it daily with the door open. It's her room. Frenchies love to be around people so, in my opinion, they don't need to be left every day for long periods by themselves.

I agree with the above. It depends on how well socialized the pup is and also a little on his temperament. Most Frenchies are a happy-go lucky type, especially if you get a puppy and introduce the other dog properly/set boundaries etc, you will likely not encounter any problems.
My girl loves everybody and everything, we found a 3 week old kitten last year & Maple 'raised' her. Now they are best buddies!
I do not agree with working full time and leaving your dog crated/alone all day.
Imo you should either get a dog walker or consider day care. Especially with a puppy you might run into problems, if he is alone 8+ hours.
I dont like dogs being crated, but I understand some people do it when they are puppies to help with potty training (we did, too). But now my dog is never crated and she does just fine. With proper traning you should be able to leave your dog alone without him being locked in a crate. (I think it has to do that Im from Europe originally, where crating is mostly frowned upon).

I work full time and when we got Banksy my boyfriend was working out of town 2 weeks and home 1 week. During that time on my work days banksy would go to day care. We found a lovely lady in our neighbourhood that took him for the day while I was working for $20 a day. When my boyfriend was home he would obviously be with him while I was at work.

Now I still work full time and my boyfriend is home now and he is a student. He comes home in between classes to be with the dog and let him out. Sometimes we still get daycare because we don't want him to be lonely. Now we are getting another dog so that solves that problem.

So yes you can make it work if you work full time - but you need a plan. What will you do on the days you are gone for long periods of time? Ask yourself these questions and have a plan before the time comes :) (which I see you are doing, which is great)

And I cant comment on the other question... I have found that Banksy has a different play style than other dogs, but that is just on play dates ... It would be totally different with introducing another family member and having them grow up together.

Good luck!

:smileywelcome: to you! My experience with French boys is they really LOVE to play! As long as your dog likes to play, they should do fine!

My boy is a little different than most frenchie boys, because deaf dogs tend to bite harder, even during play, but he's usually great with my female, she never corrects his bites so I'm assuming she can handle it, or he's learned to be more gentle...

My sister in law has a 1 1/2 year old 6 lb female chihuahua who people guards & is overall... Well... a brat haha! She comes over and my frenchies tag team wrestle and pounce her. With correction and a watchful eye they never hurt her and she actually plays back, she just can't do much wrestling like frenchies normally play. She tries her best though!

Titan always tries to bite her cheeks like he does to our other frenchie and he does it SO slowly and SO gently it's seriously the most hilarious thing I've ever witnessed!

As long as your chihuahua is well rounded they will adjust and work out just fine!

I agree that a Frenchie should not be left alone all day. They are big on human contact and take their jobs quite seriously on being a companion. I would also consider the temperment of your existing dog when choosing a Frenchie. Does she like to play with other dogs? A puppy can be quite annoying to a dog who doesn't want anything to do with it. My Jake was super laid back and really enjoyed playing with other dogs, so we decided to add a female Frenchie and well she is kind of a bitch. It all works out though because Jake does not escalate any situations and just submits. Even during training when I get the treats out, Stella starts guarding and will snap at Jake.
I hope you find a good fit and good luck in your search!

I have to agree with that point, because when we added a male (we picked a girl first) the female got pretty mean over her food. We had her almost 100% corrected with food and bone aggression but she reverted back towards T. She doesn't bite but she shows her little nubby teeth every once in awhile.

Our male and female also take being a companion in two totally different meanings. Isabelle wants to play alone, eat alone, etc. but HAS to sleep with us. Titan likes to play with us, eat with us there, lays literally on me and even will be laying on my chest in my face to chew his antler. He will not sleep with us though. He HAS to be crated to sleep. For naps and all night.

Thanks for all the replies! I've decided on a male and would like to get one I'm January sometime. I've been looking online locally (Missouri) but don't seem to have too many options I'm comfortable with. How did you all seek out your first frenchie and any advice? I've heard of breeders shipping before and was wondering if anyone has had any luck with that route? Ideally I would like to find someone in my state or surrounding state. Thanks again :)

Awesome! Excited for you.

We fly to Detroit because that's where our breeder is. If you pay $100 extra you can take a puppy as a carry on in a doggie travel bag. You have to book this special through the flight.

Other than that, there are puppy nannies... you will have to ask your breeder about that they are usually the ones who organize it. They are flight attendants who will fly on stand by and deliver the dog to your air port.

Frenchies and other flat faced dogs can not go under the plane as cargo because of their breathing problems, so they must go as a carry on. There are specific rules that apply based on the age when the dog is flying... those rules can be found online depending on which air line you are travelling with

Hope this helps :)

I know a fabulous Frenchie who came from Missouri (we're in CA). I'll text them now and get some breeder info for you!

No, mine is from a breeder in CA. But our old neighbors have one they flew in from Missouri. I am waiting to hear back from them.

He's on the right in the red harness. He's got a great personality.
