Hey all, Pope is doing so well and getting big! He has mastered potty training, sit and stay (unless there are strangers distracting him nearby... still working on that one) and he sleeps all through the night. We love him! I want to start training him to be okay out of his crate when my husband and I are not there. We work right across the street, so Pope gets visits at lunch and we are home quickly after work, but we sometimes have things to get done, or work functions and hate the idea of him being crated any longer. I did some test runs between leaving in the morning and lunch and he seemed to do fine! but suddenly he is a barking fool if we try and leave without him. We live in an apartment complex, so that really isnt something that we can let happen. Today I came home and he had torn up a magazine :/

For those of you that leave your frenchies free when you're away, how did you do it?

I don't use a crate for Jax when he is home alone nor does he get free range. I confine him to the kitchen area and make sure it is "dog proof" so there is nothing he can get into. He usually barks for a few minutes and then my guess is he goes to sleep.

Wondering the same thing. I never owned a dog that didn't have free run of the house. I also didn't raise those dogs. Something tells me when the time is right... You'll just know.

Your right about knowing when the time is right. We just knew with Jake...I think he was about a year old. Stella on the other hand, who is just barely 10 mos. old, no way! Her time is spent in an exercise pen with a bed, toys, etc. while we are gone.

We pretty much always crate ours when we are gone, unless I am just gone for a short time, then I might leave one or two out, but not very often. Keeps them out of trouble.

You're right. Growing up, our dogs were given free run of the entire downstairs, and it was just a natural thing 'when the time was right'.

I read too many stories of dogs chewing wires or getting into something or tearing something up and getting a blockage when bored so I don't think ethier of my dogs will have free roam. My frenchie is kept in a crate while still learning to be house broken and my 6 month old pug is 100% house broken so she stays in a baby pen that has adjustable sizes so she can still run around but only has her bed and a few toys. They are really good to look into once you know your dog is trained because she never liked being confined in a small place for a long time without crying and barking.
