Hello,
We just purchased our first Frenchie a few weeks ago and are in love with him already!! As a matter of fact my kids have me talked into buying another one for him to play with and companionship while we are at work/school.. So I figured if we are gonna have two then Why not get a female and when they mate we can make some money off the litter.. But I’m not a breeder and don’t know what brings the money and desired colors. I do know that majority of the time C-section needs to be performed and little things like that and I’m prepared to take on that responsibility to ensure the safety and comfort of the female. So if anyone could shed some light on how to get certain color or what the male genes carry in and what female genes carry over. Etc. Any Info would be appreciated!

I think cream is the most popular color but I prefer brindle. From what I have seen most litters are mixed colors. The most important thing is to get healthy puppies with good temperaments.

There are so many reasons why not to do this, that I don't really know where to begin. With all due respect, I would just say enjoy your dogs as pets, there are enough backyard breeders out there.

Thanks Alice! And Frenchie Girl I don’t know if I would be considered a back yard breeder as much as someone who has two pets and if the natural thing happens it happens. Like I said I’m not getting them for that purpose but if it happens why not be prepared and think ahead on it?

Amen to the Brindles!!!!

I have to agree with Frenchie Grrrl. I understand the desire to breed -- who wouldn't want a litter of adorable puppies. But French Bulldogs have a predisposition to so many health issues that I would personally want to get a puppy from an experienced breeder with a reputation for quality puppies. Plus, many breeders have purchase contracts which specifically prohibit the buyer from breeding the dog. Finally, a C-section is still an invasive surgical procedure that carries some risk. I normally don't like to discourage anyone from something they really want to do, but there is just so much that could potentially go wrong, for you, for your dogs (puppies included) and for a potential buyer.

There is more to breeding than just what will make money. And most of the time, bulldogs need to be artificially inseminated. Reputable breeders perform health testing on both the female and male. Properly breeding is expensive and is more than just putting two dogs together.

Zeus18, please do not mistake our comments about breeding as disparaging in any way. We are always happy to welcome a Frenchie owner to the site. You inadvertently stepped into a controversial issue among many Frenchie owners -- one that many of us are very passionate about. Regardless of what you decide to do, we would love to hear more about Zeus and any other Frenchie that joins your household.

What I find odd and down right ignorant is the fact that everyone is so against it but yet everyone in this forum has bought one from someone who has done it.. It’s that kind of hypocrisy that makes ppl not want to ask questions to make it safe. And if nobody new starts then the breed would cease to exist. But I have had a couple ppl that have reached out in my inbox and I appreciate that. So for those of you who are so against it then ask yourself what you are promoting by owning one. I’m just a guy with a family that would have loved to be apart of bringing joy to others. And I will do so but it won’t be on account of anyone in here and I’ll just keep the results to myself and my family.

I think what people are against is backyard breeders, no one is against reputable breeders who breed to better the breed. There are so many French Bulldogs out there that are bred poorly and have so many health issues because people are only breeding them to make money. This breed already comes with many health issues so why add onto those with poor breeding. And when people get a bulldog that has all these health issues, many times they end up at a rescue because they can't or don't want to deal with the costs involved of taking care of it.

I can't speak for others, but I think the words "what brings the money" and "popularity" are two things that jumped out to me and led me to respond the way I did. Along with the fact that you just picked up your first Frenchie a few weeks ago, which means that you not only don't have experience with breeding, but you don't have experience with this particular breed, and like Cbrugs said, French Bulldogs can have many health issues.

Yeah, many people here have purchased puppies from breeders, myself included. Certainly not everyone, as there are some that have adopted through rescue, etc. If you think that makes me a hypocrite, I'm fine with that. However, unless I adopt through a rescue, I wouldn't get another dog that wasn't from a breeder that doesn't also show the breed, and do thorough health testing on their breeding animals. I'll admit, after just losing a dog, I was in a bad place when I bought my first Frenchie, and should have done more homework.

All that being said, I certainly wasn't trying to insult you - I probably should have posted at a time when I was less busy and could take more time to make my point in a less abrupt manner. For that I apologize.

Interesting, new to the forum and already characterizing comments as downright ignorant.

Please add me to that group.

As a forum of devoted owners, we have difficulty with someone who has owned his very first Frenchie for only a few weeks and is asking about colors for breeding purposes. We are a supportive community and realize every breeder at some point had a first litter.

However, one would hope that they first had some experience raising a dog or two prior to breeding.

That at least explains the rationale behind my downright ignorance.

Down right ignorance is casting judgement on a topic that you don’t have information on. I grew up with Boxers and my mom and dad pretty much did what I’m wanting to do my entire life with our pets so it’s something I’m very familiar with and have done and been apart of.. But not with Frenchies.. So yeah Mattcantwin trying to shame someone, judging, or criticizing someone right out of the gate is Ignorant. I guess the Frenchie community is much like the Left Wingers in politics.

We are not... this started off badly and it has gotten worse. There is a link on our sister site EBN that I will send you regarding what to know if you plan to breed.
