Can anyone help with a recipe for an iodine soak? Penelope’s ears are so bad too, I take her cone off for a few minutes and she itches until bloody. I’ve been cleaning them with witch hazel. I’m thinking as we see the vet today if I shouldn’t get a medicated shampoo for her too? I have a natural shampoo for allergies but it doesn’t help at all. Any suggestions for a medicated shampoo from the vet?

Iodine soak for feet- add povidone ( Betadine ) to a container with water that you can dip her feet into, or to kitchen sink, just enough to make it tea coloured. Soak for at least 5 min

Shampoo for allergies- Curaseb or Ketohex ( contain chlorhexidine and ketoconazole ).

Hopefully once you get Penelope on the right food and possibly the Cytopoint shots her ears will clear up. If she can eat fish without regurgitating start with that and then put that into rotation since fish has a lot of omega 3's which are great for her skin. I wouldn't keep a dog on fish long term due to all the pollutants and radiation in the oceans these days.

I would not use witch hazel on her ears every day as that can irritate them and make them worse, it will burn them when it gets irritated. Wipe them out with an unscented baby wipe or a good ear wash solution if needed. We only use the wipes on ours.

It turns out that she has a mild ear infection. I will use an ear cleaning solution along with ear medication. Her paws are so bad right now so I’m trying to find a way to reduce swelling, redness, and itching. Betadine hasn’t worked :(

Jcstorlie What is going on with her paws?

Itching, constant licking, redness, and swelling. The vet said their was a little yeast

@Jcstorlie For the swelling and redness you can try soaking in Epsom salt, but dry them well after the soak as to not promote the yeast. Mal-a-ket wipes are good for yeast, but I would try the Epsom salt soaks first. Sounds like allergies. Also every time you take her outside, when you bring her inside wash her feet off with a damp towel, this may help with the allergies, but dry them well after. I hope this helps.

I did an Epsom salt soak today too with no good results. I bathed her after being outside today. I will wipe her feet down every time she goes outside from now on. I will track the wipes down that you recommended. I really want Penelope to be itch free. The past few weeks have been tough

Benedryl also helps with the allergies. 1 mg. per pound of weight. If the allergies get too bad you can double the dose. There is also a shot that helps but I can't remember the name of it. When I get home Monday I will try to find out and let you know. We give it to Henri and it last 6 months for him.

I have her on Zyrtec right now plus she got Cytopoint injection today. I’m hoping the injection will help soon

Benedryl also helps with the allergies. 25 mg. per pound of weight. If the allergies get too bad you can double the dose. There is also a shot that helps but I can't remember the name of it. Benadryl dose is 1 mg/pound or 0.5 mg per kg of weight.

Once you get Penelope on raw food and Cytopoint injection kicks in, then the problem will just go away on its own. If the Cytopoint injection doesn't work you will have to switch to Apoquel which is more immunosupressive. If she has any interdigital sores I would put an antibiotic ointment on those till they go away. Continue soaking the paws with the betadine or epsom salts or washing with ketohex or curaseb shampoo until you fix the allergy problem. Penelope might continue to lick her paws a bit from time to time after the allergies go away due to it being a soothing behaviour for her, but it won't be nearly as often or cause trouble.

Man, I just feel so badly for your Penelope. I know I've said this ad nauseam on this board, but my Frenchie had so many of these same issues and I would say in less than a week on frozen raw duck, she was doing so much better. Her paws and ears cleared up (she had an ear infection also and needed special solution). She wasn't getting total relief from Benedryl or Zyrtec, although it probably helped a little. I also wipe her down with pet wipes: face and paws, under belly, etc....each time she comes inside from being out.

If you are changing to duck soon and she's had that Cytopoint shot people have been recmmending, I'd think (and hope) it would only be a matter of a few more days before Penelope sees some improvement. I know it is like an eternity to you. Hang in there. She is so lucky to have a devoted owner that wants to see her feel better.

OOPs, I meant 1 mg. per pound of weight, not 25 :)

The Cytopoint shot is already helping. Yay! Thank for all of encouragement and kind words. I’ve never owned a dog which required so much special care but I’m devoted to give Penelope the best. She’s the sweetest, silliest girl. I love her to pieces!

Great news !!! Should work for about 4 weeks but you might be able to stretch out to 6 weeks.

Can you share what the approximate cost is for a shot? My old vet, who I left, would not give it to Daphne for some reason. She still licks her paws once in a while and scoots. Would she be a candidate for this?

2bullymama can tell you price. Doesn't sound like she needs it. For scooting you should make sure there's no tail pocket. If there is one, clean it every day with a diaper wipe and possibly some witch hazel, and then dry with a paper towel. If there isn't, clean with a diaper wipe and then put on zinc oxide cream after until she stops scooting, then zinc oxide cream once every few days. If she keeps scooting even with all that she might have issues with infected or impacted anal glands that might need intervention by a vet.

Cytopoint is great for environmental allergies... we get it for our Bulldog, Lambeau... the cost is by weight. Lambeau weights 58 lbs and the shot is $90. We were able to only do two shots this summer, but I’m seeing his ears start to gunk up and he is starting to go at his paws, so we may need another shot to get through fall season

I'm beginning to wonder if the cytopoint shot is what would help my poor Molly. She is always after her feet, licking mostly, sometimes, trying to chew I think. I notice that her paws are reddish looking (the skin between the pads). I thought it might be discoloring from all the licking..... but maybe it's a yeast infection, as well as allergies?? I've been doing the Betadine soak for several days now (maybe a week at this point) to no avail this time (it has seemed to work in the past)..... Please, any suggestions? Her breeder keeps telling me to change her food, but I'm hesitant to do that as I'm not sure what to change..... (she gets kibble (Fromm and Zignature), as well as raw venison, along with pumpkin, kelp, probios, cranberry powder, milk thistle, bananas occasionally and freeze dried raw.).
