Hi everyone, Ginger is 12 now and really slowing down. She has a little trouble getting up and has to just stand for a minute before she moves. Poor sweet. I would like to start giving her something to help but was wondering if glucosomine really works. What about a half an aspirin twice a day? Are OTC things okay or should I talk with the vet and get something stronger?

I have no idea... but just wanted to say aweee I feel for her. Poor baby. Hope someone has some advice and you can get her feeling good and happy. She's lucky she has such a caring mama who loves her ☺

Yes, glucosomine does work the OTC stuff is fine to use, but you can also look into NuVet supplements... that is what I use for my guys

Glucosamine works.
An Omega 3 fish oil would also be very beneficial, because Omega 3'a are anti- inflammatory.
Another great thing to give is curcumin. Its the active ingredient in Turmeric, but you can find it in concentrated form. (For example Dr. Mercola makes one).
Some people have also success with Green lipped mussel.

Lots of options. ;) I wouldnt give her aspirin on a daily basis.

Yes i agree with 2bullymamma,Nuvet have a joint supplement line called Nujoint. It works wonders for my APBT.but can be a little pricey,if you decide autoship you get a discount.Wish you the best of luck★☆★

Well, I know a lot of dogs that do well on it. ;)
It all depends!

My childhood dog completely blew her knees out at 10 years old and we put her on a joint supplement since surgery was over $6,000 and we wanted to see if the joint supplement would help her quality of life.

Bam! She lived another 5 years, perfectly fine! Her ultimate demise was her legs but she also had other issues by that time, at 15, she lived a great life!

I'd definitely try joint supplements recommended by everyone here!

I need to order some for both of my dogs. I'm so worried all the time!

I am only familiar with Rimadyl, which is a prescription. It helped my bull terrier tremendously as opposed to any supplements. Good luck and I hope you find something that will help her be more comfortable.

Hi everyone! I wanted to start my 3 year old frenchie on supplements like omega 3 and glucosamine as well....on his last annual exam i was told he has luxating patella but after speaking to a specialist and seeking a second opinion, I was told that because he doesnt limp and has absolutely no symptoms, a surgery at this point is not necessary. Have u guys tried giving ur frenchie glucosamine for people? I know theres one at the vet which costs an arm and a leg, and if thats the case i obviously want whats best for my little fur baby. But if the one for humans work just as well, then it would really help!

If so, whats the dosage you give them?

And last question! Do you think he's to young to start supplements?

I always take what vets say with a grain of salt, unfortunately i havent had the best experience with them and i feel the ones ive seen have become more "sales people" than actually caring for our pets well being, so i would love to hear your suggestions! Thank you so much!

Glucosamine and chondroitin are now considered ineffective for people and probably won't help your dog either.

"Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, alone or in combination, were not significantly better than placebo in reducing knee pain in the overall group of patients."

Scientific truth on this forum is very much a taboo, especially when it seems dismal. The majority here seems to favor misleading anecdotes and Mercola.

Defend science and you will get bullied, so to speak... :)

Look, man, your negativity is totally bringing this place down. Remember the old adage: if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

If you don't personally believe in something, fine. But do NOT come on here and tell others that they're stupid for believing something you don't believe in. That's rude.

I will tell you from PERSONAL experience that I take glucosamine for my knee and I do not give one stinking rat's behind what "science" says, it works. If I forget to take it for a day, my knee hurts and snaps and pops. It's not just in my head, either.

So stop right now with your cynicism. Just stop. BTW, for the record, I'm a HUGE science believer. I am a licensed science teacher and I work in the science field. I also believe in truth and evidence.

Peace out, man.

If you have had an older dog and saw the loss of pep in their step, waking up very stiff, ect. then you should most CERTAINLY at least try NuJoint. If it doesn't work there is a money back guarantee.... but I can tell you it does work!!! I even started taking a human form of one from Costco and man it's awesome to see my knees do not crack when I bend them as much and my lower back is a lot better too. The reasons I recommend NuJoint over other OTC supplements is you get ONLY what is on the label, no artificial fillers- no soy, sugar.... and it's made in the USA too. They do have a warehouse in Canada also, oh and did I mention that money back guarantee? :donate:

For less than $20 a month it is the best $$$ you can ever spend on your dogs.

I started giving my Aussie Glyco-Flex 3 when she hurt her knee. She is 10 now and has been on it for a few years now. She has done awesome!! It's definitely a preventive. I also use Nupro, I sprinkle it on their food then wet it with a little hot water. All my dogs love it! My Frenchie is only 4 months so he's not getting any of that yet. With your baby being older you probably need to ask your vet for something for arthritis. Also keeping the weight off will help a lot.
