Pierce does not handle protein well. Most of the high quality foods also have high protein content. Anytime he has a high amount of protein, his stomach is really messed up. When he was on the prescription diet for his bladder stones, he was fine. The protein content was low. Once I put him back on his usual food (Merrick) it was back to the usual. A couple of weeks ago I was out of food and in a hurry and grabbed some Natures Recipe at the store. Lower protein. No stomach problems. I want him on a higher quality food. Any ideas?

Fromm has a couple formulas that are under 30%. Zignature does as well. Acana. If you wanted to try a dehydrated raw, Grandma Lucy's Artisan has a couple. The Honest Kitchen might have some as well.

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I will look at the Zignature ones. I really like that brand and we have a great pet food store that carries it, along with the others mentioned. He has been like this since we got him as a puppy 3 years ago. He weighs 30 pounds, so it definitely doesn't affect him too much!

Hi Teresa, do you add probiotics to his food? It helps with digestion and just like us humans everything starts in the gut. Personally I feed raw and so if you're guy doesn't do well on high protein that wouldn't work for you. There is a wonderful magazine called Dogs Naturally that is filled with information for any dog owner. Not breed specific. I hope it's alright that I name the magazine. I have learned a lot from it.
