On September 9th, we made the difficult decision to send our Gracie Girl to the rainbow bridge after we lost a four year battle to a chronic life-threatening disease. I lit a candle for her on November 4th, which would have been her 7th birthday. She was sweet, funny, affectionate, determined and feisty. Our house is filled with memories of her and we miss her terribly. I once heard the phrase that a wild heart can’t be broken. And hers was just such a wild heart. I wanted to capture that essence of her and wrote the following tribute to her on her birthday,
Gracie — A Wild Heart Unbroken
Wise words once spoken,
“A wild heart can’t be broken”
Our Gracie a beloved pet
Her recent loss our great regret
Her stature so small
Belied a spirit inspiring awe
A wolf’s legacy of sinew and bone
No human can ever really own
She occupied our home for a while
Gave us purpose, made us smile
With an attitude so large
No question who was always in charge
Too soon her small body grew frail
All efforts to cure her to no avail
But resilient she would remain
Through all the suffering and the pain
For wild hearts can’t be broken
Their spirits burn bright once awoken
And illuminate the heart and mind
Of the beloved humans they leave behind
