Does anyone have any recommendations on how to deal with mites?

I had a sneaking suspicion that the reoccurring rashes were more than just allergies, as my previous vet told me. My little guy (9 months) had a skin scraping on Friday after scratching himself raw and it was confirmed; he has mites. (demodectic, the non-contagious kind).

The vet gave him an antibiotic shot to help with the infection he got from scratching. She also gave us ivomec to administer orally once a day.

We have him in an E collar and a t-shirt, to try to protect his skin as best we can. I've been giving him baths with medicated shampoo. He gets a zyrtec in the morning and benadryl at night. He already eats raw.

I'm at a loss of what to do to help him. He is so itchy!

Any recommendations?

I have no personal knowledge but from what I've read you do a benzoyl peroxide shampoo followed by a amitraz dip every 2 weeks, continued for 1-2 months after no mange is detected on skin scrape. Advantage Multi ( = Advocate ) is also applied topically on the neck every 2 weeks to kills mites, and at the same time takes care of heartworm, whipworm, roundworm etc. After the mange is all cured the Advantage can be applied monthly as usual.

That type of mange is caused by a suppressed immune system. He needs to get more nutrition, vitamins, and minerals to build his immune system. Some plain yogurt every day will help also. Goats milk yogurt is better on their tummies. Plus if you are feeding chicken, I would stop to see if that helps with the itching. Some are allergic to chicken.

Just curious how your dog is with the E-Collar. My dog went crazy when I put a hard plastic one on once after surgery , and managed to get it off after half an hour. I'm thinking of buying a soft E-Collar or a muzzle if I need to prevent her from licking somewhere in the future.

YouTube borax and peroxide to treat mange. First hand experience works!!

He hates the E-Collar. All he does is scratch at it! Let me know how you like the soft one!

Thanks for the recommendation! Do you know how many treatments you gave your pup? We tried it twice, but have not see much improvement yet.

You don't need any of that. One chewable tab of Nexgard will take care of Demodex in about 2 weeks. One tab! Nothing else.

Most vets are so incompetent and misinformed it's not even funny...

Each dog is different. I saw improvement after 2 treatments..but because of frenchy "weak immune system" i wud do it regularly...also need to look for ways to boost immune system....probiotics is what I'm gonna try next...Currently I'm lookn for the RIGHT kind of food.. Mr Gibbles been thru many None Grain foods..but mostly he's been on RAW..ex chicken and beef....none worked very well.. he's been on fish now and will try some fish oil too...suppose to help wit shedding....Over all its a trial and error.. till i find the RIGHT combo!
