Poor Bitty. Does anyone have any experience with their Frenchie constantly licking/flicking their tongue?

Something about her doesn’t seem right, like she’s having discomfort somewhere.

Xrays didn’t show anything unusual (body X-ray). Is on pills for upset tummy.

Her appetite has decreased as well as her drinking.

Hi Citty - yes, she gets blood work done every 6 months, but they decided to check it given her liver issue anyway and her ALT was 263, which for Bitty is pretty darn good...

Hey Michelle... check her teeth, roof of mouth?

Yes, check her mouth. Louie was doing this one time and he had little things from a weed he grabbed sticking out of his gums and the roof of his mouth.

Also, I know sometimes licking and tongue flicking can be because the dog is anxious.

I can't even pry her mouth open, nor can I get my fingers in there to try and look. Hopefully the vet will have better luck tomorrow. She is definitely in some sort of discomfort and you can see it in her eyes. :( Her eating and drinking is diminished although I got her to eat quite a bit tonight. But the licking is non stop, even to the point of being all night. She has lost a little weight too. I just wish I knew how to make her feel better. :(

I'm no vet, but I'm convinced its an issue with her mouth/teeth, etc. because she usually is crazy for popcorn..... well tonight, you could tell she wanted it very much, but when she took a piece, she would roll it around in her mouth and spit it out, trying to eat it, but not being able to comfortably. :(

Excessive licking of surfaces is usually due to gastrointestinal pain, so it could be related to the liver disease. You said she's already on a medication for that, is it famotidine?

She is on Denamarin daily, plus sub-q fluids 3x a week.

She was at the vet this past Friday for x-rays, which didn’t show anything unusual. Vet put her on 2 pills one for tummy ache and one for acid reflux. Her temp was 103 then.

Monday she was back and temp was 102.

She is back today for xrays of her mouth, and her temp is 101.

Any update Michelle?

So sorry to hear what's going on. Just wondering why she needs subcutaneous fluids? She can't keep fluids down? You could try making her bone broth if the problem is she's not drinking, or try mixing her food with water.

She had a bad tooth / root, an abscess I think. They removed that tooth yesterday.

She ate dinner last night and breakfast this morning, but vomited this afternoon (foamy vomit) and won't touch her dinner or her vitamins, which she loves. Her vet said it may take over the weekend to start getting back to normal stuff, but it's so tough to see her like this and not know what to do for her!!

I hope that tooth was the issue and she starts to turn a corner...... :(

Oh, No!! Licking air can be a sign of acid reflux.

That is what her vet first thought and has her on medication (2) for that issue, that was before the tooth issue presented itself..... so not really sure what the issue is that is causing her to be sick, not eat, and tremble, and also lose weight. :(

I assume she was under anesthesia for the tooth extraction so that could possibly have made her vomit today. And if the cause of this was her tooth, it would totally make sense as to why she was not eating, etc.

Hopefully she will get back to her normal self within the next couple of days! Maybe try giving her some broth in the meantime.

Hi Citty - what kind of broth do you suggest? I'm not partial to giving her chicken..... but I don't know

Can you get the Honest Kitchen bone broth? I think they have multiple flavors. It’s a powder you just mix with water.
