Need help with choosing food for 8 month old Frenchie witch allergies

"novel proteins vs regular proteins" I'm learning all news things about this breed. Cbrugs what is the difference on the proteins? or maybe there is an explanation already out there on the forum?? Since I'm trying to keep him off of all kinds of potatoes. which cause yeast I noticed that Fromm has both reg. and sweet potatoes listed. I'll check out the others recommended foods and make sure potato is not an ingredient. What we're noticing most about his allergies is the yeasty smell, hives under his arms and belly, red eyes and runny nose. I've read that daily rinses between baths made up of 1 gallon water, 1/2 vinegar and peppermint oil are good in reducing the yeast on his body. We haven't tried that yet, but plan to give it a try. We also just started him on NuVet which was also a recommendation, so we're hopeful to keep his allergies at bay.

Novel proteins would be bison, rabbit, venison, kangaroo, goat, etc., basically uncommon proteins. They are usually more expensive and good if your dog can't do the more common proteins. But I like to save those if all else fails. There are some kibbles that don't have potatoes, if have to look to find them. Once you figure out what is causing the allergies, it will be much more easy to manage.

Jax has severe environmental allergies and is allergic to everything green outside as well as some food issues. I've gotten pretty good at controlling things. He gets a weekly bath every week with a medicated shampoo, I usually rotate between Ketohex and Chlorohexidine. When he really goes to town with licking his paws or if they are red, I do an iodine soak. Get some povidone iodine and dilute in water until the color of iced tea and soak paws for 5 minutes. I do this once a day until it's better. For his pits and belly, I usually wipe him down with a Duoxo wipe once a day. We had pollen floating around last week and Jax got a rash all on his underside and was scratching his pits. I got it to go away in a couple of days by using the Duoxo wipes and at night I would rub the areas down with coconut oil which helped a lot. If he's all scratched up, I dilute iodine in a small down and then dab a cotton ball in it and dab that on his scratches and rash. He is also o. Apoquel and I'm about to try the Cytopoint injection.

It's a daily process but I'll do whatever I have to so that he is comfortable and not hating life.

Thank you Cbrugs for your post, great information! Petey was on Apoquel off and on, I didn't like keeping him on it due to the suppression of his immune system. We did start him on the Cytopoint injection 40mg. in April, it was quite an expensive shot (more than my allergy shots!) and only lasted a few months. They say it could last up to 4-6mos. but for Petey it was barely 2 mos. and it could be that he is on the bigger side of a Frenchie...36lbs and he may need to get the shot more often? We also started to use Malaket wipes, it smells almost like vinegar...I believe you're right you have to keep diligent on wiping them down when the go out and bathing them more often, we do all this for him but it doesn't completely take away from the itching. We'll be changing his diet by starting a new food so we're hopeful! I read a post on this website and someone suggested Natures Variety Instinct Diet Turkey Meal formula grain-free, it has no potatoes, corn etc...so we're giving it a try! We had bought a very large bag of the RC Ultamino prescription food from Chewy.com and they credited us back once I told them that is wasn't working for Petey and I ordered the new food. Chewy.com is also a great website to order from. One last comment on the RC Ultamino dog food...we took it as gospel when our Vet suggested it, and used it for a 2 months but noticed that it never stayed in Petey, he was having bowel movements 5-6x daily, which I've read isn't a good sign regarding his diet...plus all the negative comments regarding bird feathers which sounds logical...I think we're going down the right path on trying to control his allergies. I'll keep posted on how he's doing...

I think Cytopoint is only meant to last 1-2 months, so if Petey lasted 2 months that is normal. It costs roughly 90.00/injection, so it's about same price as Apoquel if it lasts 2 months, but supposed to be much safer.

Cytopoint is only supposed to last 4-8 weeks so that sounds right for Petey and you're actually pretty lucky if he went 2 months. Some dogs don't even last that long. And the cost is based on the dogs weight, just like Apoquel is. I'm hoping the injection works for Jax and that it will at least last a month. If not he's going to have to stay on the Apoquel because if he gets nothing, it will be horrible for him. So yes, bathing and wiping helps but it doesn't get rid of the itching by itself. I consider it maintenance. And it's just become part of my daily routine now. A good food is key too. You might have already said this, but do you give a probiotic? If not, you can try to add that in as well as some coconut oil. And some people have luck with an antihistamine like Benadryl or Zyrtec.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Agreed... cytopoint shots are 4-6, if you made it 8 weeks that is great. My Bulldog is on them and we currently just make it the 4 weeks and he starts scratching. Lambeau s allergies are also all environmental, pretty much everything green

Yes we just started him on a probiotic NuVet and I believe one of your posts suggested it with a link. I went ahead and ordered the supplements and just got them a few days ago, I'm hoping it will help. He does take Zyrtec daily and I'm going to try the coconut oil on him. The Cytopoint shots were a lot cheaper than HoneyOwners quoted, we paid $51 for 40mg. which is based on his weight...it could be that its costlier in Canada vs. US.

I pay $58 a month for the Apoquel for Jax and he weighs about 30 pounds. I'll find out on Friday how much the Cytopoint is but I'm guessing it might be around the same amount, give or take a little.

I WISH Cytopoint was available in Canada, we just got Apoquel recently LOL . I might take my dog to Buffalo for Cytopoint injections at some point.

My dog who licks her paws all the time is doing really well on the OnlyNatural EasyRaw turkey and sweet potato dehydrated dog food- a lot less paw licking.

Hi there. Just an update on Sadie. We switched to nature's variety limited ingredient Turkey and she is doing so much better. I totally cut out chicken, beef and pork. She gets treats with Rabbit
I also started using the ketohex shampoo and spray. The food, shampoo and spray did wonders in the few weeks we been using it. Here and there she still scratches but only after she shoved her face in the grass and leaves
Just wanted to say thank you for the great support and suggestions.

Great update! now let's see some pictures

Is she also on cetirizine ? Would help a bit also. Also can't hurt to give her some coconut oil, and give her probiotics too. If you want to step things up a notch switch her to a dehydrated raw turkey to get less tartar, urine that doesn't burn grass and hopefully better health. My dog is licking paws a lot less on the Only Natural EasyRaw. She does have 3 very bulky poos/day but that's a small price to pay.

Hi. Sadie is on Natures variety limited Turkey and I use Ketohex shampoo every 1-2 weeks on her. It has helped her so much.

Acana fresh water fish formula is good for allergies. We use to feed Orijen now switched to this to save a few dollars and they are doing great!!
