Hi there, I am a new mommy to a beautiful French bulldog that is 10 weeks old. He was shipped from Russia with his baby shots on his passport and a microchip to Florida. I went on vacation to see my sister and came across the owner and fell in love and brought him back with me to Maryland. He had some diarrhea and I put him on pumpkin with Essential Pet anti-diarrhea medication and he got a little better. After 3 days I started him on the 25% on Wellness puppy food and 75% pumpkin. Today it makes 2 weeks I have him and he is on 50%pumpkin and 50%Wellness puppy food. He now has a cough and my vet wont see him until Friday the 20th. He poops about 4 times each time I feed him (3 times a day) and its quite a lot for such a small puppy and the stool is still soft. Not watery but soft. Open to suggestions, should I increase already his wellness food? should I be feeding him a larger quantity of food, at the time 1.5 cup total a day? Just so worried that he is not getting sufficient nutrients with the pumpkin.

Welcome to FBN .... I think you might be feeding too much food in each meal... cut him back a little and see if it helps

Congrats on your new baby!

:smileywelcome: to you and your pup! I agree, cut back on the food. It should help.

I think that's too much pumpkin? We only ever do a spoonful of pumpkin added to the food.

Welcome! Sounds like quite a lot of pumpkin you are feeding and could be the cause of the diahrrea/loose stool. Have you had him checked for parasites as well?

Hi, took Odin to the Vet yesterday because his cough got worse. They tested him for Giardia and he was positive the reason for his loose smelly stools. I am so upset. He also has Kennel Cough and lost 1/2 pound. He is now on three medications. Has any of you gone through this with your dog? I am so scare that this is the beginning of an issue that will be permanent even though they are treating it. I am totally in love with him already and there is no way I am taking him back. What do you guys think?

Wally had Giardia when we first got him but it went away with medical treatment. Kennel Cough is also treatable so there's no reason to return your pup. It shouldn't be a permanent thing.

Ask blushy about what she went through with Titan and parasites. He's just fine now but it took quite some time to get rid of them.

Giardia is very common in puppies. I recently got a puppy I am training to be a service dog and she had giardia and kennel cough as well. She had a very mild case of kennel cough most likely because she had received a dose of the vaccine. I was concerned because it is so contagious but my frenchies did not get it. The vet put her on doxycycline for ten days and she was fine. The giardia will eventually clear up too and you will notice your pup's stools getting more firm.

Jax had giardia when we first got him and it cleared up with the first round of medication. He got it a second time and that cleared up with no issues as well. Jax may have had kennel cough once cause it was like he was coughing/hacking but it only lasted a week and it went away on its own. It may have been something else though. But I wouldn't be too concerned as both giardia and kennel cough are not lifelong illnesses.

I'm sorry to hear! Getting bad news with puppies is never fun.

I've never heard of giardia at all, unless BAM it weaseled it's way into my life and is still stressing me out a year later. Depending on the severity of the giardia, it actually CAN be a life long illness, but it's much easier to control once they test negative. Titan has bouts of relapse due to the parasites and the amount of medication it took to get a negative test, and parasites can embed into their intestinal walls and present themselves for any given reason... It gets easier with antibiotics and probiotics. I cannot remember the name of the probiotics we use from our vet, but it's in white push tube and resembles peanut butter. The FortiFlora did NOTHING for Titan.

As for a glimmer of hope, once you rid the kennel cough, and get the negative giardia test, you're pretty much in the clear, but their digestive tract may be a little wonky sometimes. I think Titan is on the extreme end of the spectrum, where others who have commented are on the mild end. You'll soon be able to gauge where your little pup lies.

Best of luck! It gets easier!

Sorry your pup is sick, but as others have said, once he gets rid of this, he should be fine. Can't wait to see pics of your baby. Plus only a spoonful of pumpkin is plenty.
