Hello,

I am thinking about adopting a french bulldog puppy from a reputable breeder and I have been reading a lot about their health issues. I am planning on getting a wellness plan for his first year vaccinations and pet insurance, however would they still be an expensive dog to maintain even if I still had insurance?

If anyone has any feedback on their frenchies care, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
RB

I don't see why dog should be expensive if you get pet insurance, unless they don't cover expensive drugs you may need later such as Cytopoint injection for allergic dog with atopic dermatitis, or if they don't cover orthopedic surgeries, soft palate surgeries etc. You can make a lot of remedies and keep meds around to treat dog yourself, eg.
1) 50/50 mixture apple cider vinegar and witch hazel to spray out ears for minor ear infections
2) baby wipes to clean out wrinkles and wipe after with dry round cosmetic pad or paper towel
3) use ketoconazole/chlorhexidine shampoo (eg. ketohex) to wash dog with allergies and to wash wrinkles with or clean tail pockets that are infected
4) betadine solution or spray to spray feet and ears
5) Wahl pet clipper to shave dog with hot spots, then apply Nu-Stock ointment

If you keep your dog on dehydrated raw dog food like me, it is a bit more expensive.

Yes, they can be... depends on what you deem expensive. Bulldog of any name/type is going to have more needs due to their genetics. I spend monthly, between food, vet, toys and daily care... about $300.00 on two dogs (French and English).
The more you spend on daily care and high quality food - chances are the less you will be at the vet.

Insurance ... I do not have/use -- we opted to have a credit card just for the pups and only use it in emergencies.
