Hi All,
I am new to the forum but need some help and advice with my Frenchie girl Harley. Last night she was chewing on a bone and I thought a would sneak up on her and try to grab her neck. She was completely freaked out and whipped her head around and started yelping like crazy. Never heard this in her 1.9 years of life even after she was bit by a dog. Immediately she started shaking and would not lift up her head. Took her to the ER vet and they said they believe it's a herniated disc in her neck. Gave her a shot and gave us pain killers and anti inflammatory medicine. Strict guidelines to as much rest as possible and keep her confined and only super short walks just to let her go to the bathroom. As of now she does not want to move, she can stand and walk but lies down within 1 or 2 minutes. She looks unbelievably sad and it's killing. Has anyone else gone through this? What should I expect? Thanks in advance

How does laser therapy work? Should I try this right away or go the rest and meds route first? Thanks for the response

Sonny had a compressed disc in his neck. This sounds the same.
He couldn't look one way and was turning his body to compensate.
He would ever so slightly get better , but then he would struggle to walk and was very unstable. He eventually collapsed and we had to take him to the supervets, they carried out a mri scan and confirmed the compressed disc. They carried out the operation which was a success and he's now better then he's ever been.
Sadly it also cost . £4200 to be exact!!
Probably not what you want to hear but they do suffer from it.

Yes, Cheli started the day we noticed.... It takes about 15 minutes and is like a massage

Oh, honey, I am so sorry!!! My sister's cockapoo had a herniated disc and they put him on meds and crate rest for I think a month. It did the trick and he has been fine ever since, which has been several years. I had a herniated disc and did a lot of research on it. At least for people, in like 95% of cases, the disc recedes on its own and doesn't require additional intervention (surgery, etc.). Mine was very serious and I lost feeling in my leg for about 6 months, however, it did eventually heal on its own and I have been fine since then. I would imagine it is the same for dogs. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the responses. Harley has not had any neurological symptoms and as of today seems to be getting ready. She has begun to eat an drink more and goes to the bathroom fine, can walk fine as well. Main issue is energy level and her depressive state. For now I think we are going to go with the rst and we keep her in a small confined pen. Wish us all the best for a speedy recovery

I'm glad to hear she's not as bad as she was, and that currently it seems like she's moving along on the road to recovery!

And I just want to note, sneaking up on your dog and spooking them while eating is a recipe for disaster. You can create food guarding and aggression, and as you unfortunately figured out, cause a scare so bad that they hurt themselves. Lesson learned!

*wishes luck for Harley* ❤️
