I live in an apartment and notice there are lots of people that walk our block with dogs all day/night. My question is, when I bring my puppy home, should she just be puppy pad trained in the home until her full set of puppy shots is complete? Most people pick up after their dogs but not everyone does, and I can only imagine what diseases are crawling in the grassy areas of my street.

To add to that, since there are so many other dogs should I even take her out for walks before her shots are complete??

I wouldn't take her anywhere that a lot of dogs are or have been until she is fully vaccinated.

Yes, pad training in the bathroom or a laundry room till she get her last round of shots at 16 weeks.

I would train on the pads too. I like to use an ex. pen with a crate in it. I would leave the door open to the crate and they will treat the crate as their safe place/bed. Water, toys and pee-pee pads and your set. Expect the pee-pee pads to suffer some abuse at times:yes: Puppies chew!

I used the below set up in my living room and loft/office. Downstairs I had tile, so it was an easy clean up if Q had an accident. For the upstairs, I bought a piece of vinyl from a fabric store and used it to protect the carpet in case she missed the potty pad. Q use to wrestle and shred the potty pads, so I eventually bought a plastic holder which deterred her. She did just fine in the house cooped up for a few weeks/months until she got the clear to go outside. I think it destroyed me more than her because I wanted to show her off!

It looks like Calle Roo has an excellent set up! I would not take a puppy out where other dogs are until fully vaccinated.

I absolutely respect what everyone is saying. I was in the same situation where I live in an apartment complex with a bunch of dogs. I didn't want Radar to get used to the pee pads and only had them in his crate because I also didn't want to have to break that habit when it came to potty training. I have a small enough place that I couldn't have one area designated for his business. I ended up taking him outside and would try to take him to a less trafficked area. It ended up fine, he didn't catch anything and even though it felt like an eternity he is housebroken.

It's such a scary thing how easy they can pick up illness. We have a parvovirus outbreak in my town right now. The quarantine sucks but it's totally worth it to wait if you are able

Definitely use puppy pads until about a week or two after the last puppy shots are complete.

Okay thank you ALL for your feedback, I'm glad I asked because I am just really paranoid and from what I am told, parvo is kinda bad in Oregon

and Calle Roo did you ever transition to potty training your puppy to go outside for the bathroom??

Unfortunately, no, I have not. Quella had Giardia when I got her from the breeder that did not go away for 2ish months, so she only knew of the potty pad. I worked with a trainer and received tons of advice from other FBN members as well as having the luxury to work from home, so I could take her for walks, but she wouldn't ever go outside. She now holds it and only goes on the potty pad. I've seen other people on the forum that didn't have much trouble transitioning from the potty pad to outdoors. I'm mostly at fault for being lazy and not consistant, but her using the potty pad is better than having accidents throughout the house... for now. :ashamed:
