Hi everyone,

We just brought home our new pup on Sunday (5 days ago). The vet said she looks very healthy. She's 12 weeks old and weighs 6lbs. I was looking around on some websites that estimate her adult weight based on what she weighs now and how old she is. 2 separate websites say her adult weight will be 12lbs well below the average. Is this something I should be concerned about or am I just reading too much stuff on the internet.

It's not an accurate estimation. Lexi weighs heavier than the others between week 6-16. Now she is the lightest amongst my 5 adult Frenchies. Take it with a pinch of salt and enjoy her puppy stage now! This period is sooooo precious!

some pups start their growth spurts earlier than others, dont worry, she will be packing on the pounds soon enough.but track her weekly to make sure she gains every week. before you know it, your puppy is 25lb adult :(

Is there a base of what she should be gaining per week? I feel like an over protective mother, lol

somewhere around a pound (.lb) give or a take a few ouches per week is what my male pup has been averaging.

She sounds OK on her weight and I wouldn't worry about it. If you are not doing this, then I would feed her three times a day if possible, until about 6 months of age. Around 7 months of age you can switch her to adult food. I like to feed pups a lot of food as they are growing and developing. Use the poop rule, if the poop is soft cut back on the food just a little. If it is hard, feed a little more until you get that happy medium. When they get around 6 to 7 months, watch their figure. If they get a little chunky, as in no waist, cut back on their food a little. A lean and fit adult is a healthy adult.

Like David said, the poop rule rules! Congratulations on getting your baby!

I think consistency of poos involves more factors than just how much you feed your dog, My dogs aren't puppies but I find quite often what dictates consistency of my dogs' poops is how long they hold it in, and whether they have had something to eat which isn't routine, ie, if it's been a long time since their last poop the poop is more solid, if something new is in their diet then the poo will be more liquidy.
