Hi Frenchie Lovers!!!

I have a couple questions I need help with. I have an 10 month old Frenchie who I am looking into getting neutered end of Sept. The vet told me they have to do bloodwork on him first which is $270.00 on top of that the actual surgery is $500.00 so I am paying almost $800.00 for this?? Does this sound right? Also my Frenchie is microchipped and they say I need to have it replaced because its too small for his size?? This is my first Frenchie but I have had other dogs and have never been told this before. Does this sound legit? I just don't want to get screwed.

Thanks so much for all your help!!!

Welcome to FBN!

Neutering prices doesn’t sound too far off. But the re-chipping, I have never heard of that at all, normally, you just get the registration updated.

Hello and welcome!
I think that sounds a smidge high (for the neuter surgery). I gues it all depends on the area. I live in the suburbs of Raleigh, NC and the price to neuter my large dog wasn't that much - although we are also talking about quite a few years ago. Maybe call around to a few vets in your immediate area and ask about pricing to determine if your vet's office is in the same range or way off.

I also have never heard of needing a new microchip because it is too small.

Good luck!

I'd find another vet, preferably one that specializes in Frenchies and English Bulldogs to do any surgery. I like to wait until a few months after their first heat cycle. If you don't want to go through the fuss of a heat cycle, then do it now before she goes into heat. I have had plenty of surgeries done on my English and Frenchies, (C-sessions, spay and neuters) and have never done the blood work. But we use an excellent bully specialist. As far as the microchip, that is a bunch of bull. As long as it can be read by a chip reader, it does not need to be replaced. They just want to sell you another chip and put that baby through unnecessary pain.

I don’t know why the bloodwork would be that high in price. I’ve done bloodwork multiple times before procedures and I’m fairly certain it was under $100. I can’t remember how much I paid for the neuters. And I agree with others on the chip...never heard of one being too small.
