Good day FBN,

So I have had my new bully for 5 days now, and have had him into the vet for bringing his shots up to date etc... but I a now having doubts regarding the shots.

I brought him into a raw food store in my area, and was told that the boosters he is receiving and the "optional" shots are unnecessary due to the puppies natural immunity from the birth mother. I was told that vets these days are over vaccinating animals, when the dog already holds a full immunity for whatever vaccination it may be that the vet says is needed.

I am now very concerned about moving forward with any more vaccinations.

The very knowledgeable woman I was speaking with made very strong sense of everything she told me....and has two 16 year old poodles who have NEVER HAD A SINGLE SHOT, and are the spokes puppies for a bill of clean health...all thanks to their raw diet.

I know there are raw haters, and I know there are people who live by it....But I am starting to put my beliefs into the holistic route for my little guy.

He currently has 4 shots, which I am now concerned about moving forward with the boosters etc.

I would love to hear anybodies intelligent input on the matter, and your stories and views on the matter.

I am simply concerned that the boosters for these shots are going to ruin his natural immunity when I could simply make sure he keeps a proper raw diet and keeps his immune system running at tip top!
Thanks for your input!
Gary

I vaccinated Jax and never had any issues. Plus, he has been boarded, goes to doggie daycare and Petsmart for grooming so certain vaccines are mandatory.

If you live in an apartment they require shots and if you will be exposing your puppy to potentially unvaccinated then it's wise to get the shots as a precautionary measure. But everyone must do their own research as you must live with the risks and benefits.

I am working at a similar place and I can tell you that its true that nowadays people/vet overvaccinate and we are seing so many really sick animals as result.
Puppies are protected by the moms antibodies until they are about 10 weeks old. Thats why shots before that are totally useless. Dr Dodds and other well known immunologists recommend a Distemper and Parvoshot at 10 weeks and then another one at between 14-16 weeks. After that the dog is very likely protected for its whole life.
Other vaccinations such as Kennel cough,Lyme are usually not necessary.
Instead of yearly 'booster shots' we recommend Titer tests, a blood test in which the dogs antibody level is meassured.

A raw diet together with minimum vaccinations and a natural approach to flea/tick prevention etc is the greatest way to make your dogs life as healthy and happy as possible :)

We always give our pups the round of shots, but the more I read, the more I think after the puppy shots, they should have the titer test done every so often.

We did the regular puppy shots and the more I learn the more I'm leaning towards doing the titer tests before his "upkeep" shots.

I really appreciate everyones views on this. It gives me a lot to think about before going in for his "boosters"...or immunity depleting shots from what I have been reading/being told haha.

I will probably keeping little Doug at what he has had for shots and just keeping an eye on his diet etc to ensure a healthy life, and stay away from those shots that are encouraging future vet visits. he has gone through his first round shot, so I feel I am content at this point from my readings etc.

Keep the input coming, I love hearing what everyone has to say!

Gary :)

I would make sure my puppy was fully vaccinated. Parvo is not something you want to risk.

I personally know at least 20 people that have titered their dog after a year and the dog is protected and only had two of the puppy shots. As long as one Parvo and one Distemper(get them seperately if possible) vaccination was at 14 weeks or above the dog should very likely be protected. Maple has an appointment for her titer on the 1st and I will let you guys know what we found out :)
