I have been buying my 7 month old Frenchie Orijen Puppy food, but it seems like his tummy just isn't getting used to it. He's been on it now for several months and he is still having really soft, almost runny stool at times.

He weighs about 22 lbs and we feed him three times a day (morning, lunch and dinner times). He's getting about half a cup to three quarters of a cup per serving or close to about 2 cups of food per day.

Is the Fromm Family puppy food that much better? I thought Orijen was good stuff, but it sounds like I might have to change over to Fromm and give that a try. Thoughts?

I also had problems with Stella on Orijen. If you want a grain free kibble, I would try Acana (Pork and butternut squash) or Amicus. Both don't have potatoes either, which can be inflammatory. I sprinkle freeze dried chicken on the kibble as well. It may also just be that you are feeding him too much if his stools are loose.

Thanks for the info! We feed our other dog the freeze dried chicken so we might see about adding some of that to the mix. Our food scoop is 1/4 cup and he gets two of those three times a day. So at most he gets 1 3/4 cups of food a day. He's also very active. We have 5 acres that he gets to play around on daily so I'm not sure if that gets factored into how much we should feed him over the recommended amount or not?

You might be feeding him too much.Look at the feeding chart on the site :
22 lbs puppy weight. Adult weight 10 kg 1 cup a day! Even a 20 kg(44 lbs, way more than a frenchy weighs) dog only needs 1 2/3 cups a day. Recommended feeding charts tend to suggest to much anyway. Id give him less & see if his stool gets better. You can also add some fibre (pumpkin puree or chia seeds etc) to help.

My BT didn't do well on Orijen either so both dogs get Acana Pacifica (fish). They both do very well on it and I top it with either salmon or coconut oil.

Thanks for the tips! I will pick up some new food and see if that changes anything.

We feed both our boys Nature's Variety Instinct Limited Ingredient and no more soft poop!

My guys do great on the Fromm grain free line... what I really like about it is you can switch flavors without transition.... we are on Pork and Peas right now, but have used pretty much all of the grain free except the TunaLini

4Nines sounds like you are feeding too much. The food you have him on is a good food, but at 7 months of age you can feed twice a day and about 3/4 cup each feeding. That should help with the soft poops. We feed ours FROMM 4 star food, and at his age you could go to adult food.

Update: we mixed in a little bit of canned pumpkin in with his Orijen Puppy food last night and it seemed to do the trick! He made it all the way through the night without having to go outside and seems to be a happy boy today.

I'd like to get him on the grain free Fromm so that's probably what we will switch to next.

Agree with above, sounds like too much food for your pup. Orejin is an excellent food, one of the best out there by viewing ingredients alone, but I have never tried it personally. Just try cutting back on the amount of food per feeding, it's amazing how just 1/4 cup too much food can give the soft poos. :poo:

I'm happy to report that a dollop of canned pumpkin mixed in with the Orijen puppy food has done the trick! It worked incredibly fast as well. So if all the protein from the Orijen puppy is giving your Frenchie loose stool, give the canned pumpkin a try :)

Would be careful on the overfeeding. At his age, 2 times a day should be perfect! Good luck!
