Hi,
I just bought a french bull dog puppy, I got him last night. My question is he makes this sound that starts off as him sniffling then he makes a gagging hacking sound. when he does it his head goes low and he opens his mouth

When my boy does this I either A) ignore him and let him work it out on his own, or B) block his nostrils for a few seconds to stop him.

He has very tight nares and needs surgery to fix that...

Hope this helps a little!

But since he is such a new puppy, I'd take him to the vet to rule out kennel cough or something else, though. That's what I would personally do!

Its normal. I dont however agree with the whole blocking the nostrils thing though. He is sneezing for a reason and its best to let him run its course. Blocking his nostrils might stop him but whatever causes the sneezing episode would still be in there. Thats why let the dogs natural reaction do its thing.

You should mention it to your vet during your well puppy check up! Reverse sneezes sound worse than they are!

This is normal, reverse sneezing is not actually a sneeze at all. Reverse sneezing is a spasm that occurs when the soft palate and throat become irritated. Gently massaging your dogs throat may help to stop the spasms. Covering the nostrils is sometimes effective because it makes the dog swallow, which can clear out whatever is causing the irritation. This is what I do to mine. You can also offer food, as this will sometimes work. If they do it often, you can give Benedryl to help with the allergy.
