Hi. I'm new to this site and would appreciate some advice from experienced frenchie owners!

I have a 3-month-old frenchie, Billy (first one I've had). He is generally a very happy and healthy little guy but I've noticed some mucusy discharge coming from his nose over the past couple of days. He is still eating, drinking and playing as normal but sounds quite congested at night. I live in Brisbane, Australia, which is very hot and humid at the moment so I use aircon to keep Billy cool, but also take him out for regular walks and play time when it's cooler so that he's not in that dry aircon environment all the time.

So my question is if it is normal for dogs to get colds - which is what I think this must be? No coughing, sneezing, runny eyes etc. Only symptoms are the nasal discharge (which is thick and a yellow colour) and some congestion especially at night time. Otherwise he seems perfectly healthy so I don't want to run off to the vet. He's had all his shots.

Any advice would be great! Thanks.

Not sure about dogs but normally when people have a yellow, think mucous it can be an infection. Can you call your vet and tell him the symptoms, see what they say?

I have to agree with Cbrugs I would call the vet, basically explain what you explained to us...

None of the dogs I've ever been around growing up, or currently own have ever had discharge from their nose beyond snorting clear watery boogers on purpose at me while playing haha.

Sounds like poor Billy has a sinus infection. :(

& Of course... Welcome to the forum! I'll be standing by for pictures!

:welcome3: to FBN.

yes, if the discharge has a color to it (yellow or green) take him to the vet as that is a sign of infection

:smileywelcome: to you and Billy! I agree with the others, time for a vet check!

It could just be allerdies, but to be safe, take him to a vet to make sure he does not have an infection. Henri is was doing that yesterday and this morning, so I took him to the vet today and it's just his allergies. The Cedar pollen is high right now here and has a lot of dogs and human allergies going crazy. They gave him some allergy meds and he is doing fine now. Try giving your baby some Benedryl for now until you can get him to the vet. 1 mg. per body weight. If he is close to 25 lbs, then give him the whole 25 mg. pill.

Thanks for all the advice. Poor little guy has developed a cough, seems a lot like post nasal drip, so we're off to the vet this afternoon. He is still eating and running around so fingers crossed it's not too serious and I've caught it in time.

Aww poor little guy! [emoji17]

Keep us posted!

Vet thinks it's an upper respiratory tract infection and has given me a course of antibiotics for him. I'll give them to him but am in two minds about it (as I always am when I get given antibiotics by the dr for something that it "might" be!) Anyhow, because he is so little I'd rather be safe than sorry. All a learning experience for me!

I agree, I would do the same thing. He'll be better in no time. :)
