My newly adopted Frenchy is going in to get snipped next week. This was the first check up I took him to as I got him 72 hours ago. The vet suggested that when he is put under they should evaluate him for a potential soft pallet reduction and potentially do this at the same time.

I know very little about the soft pallet reduction and I am wondering what the potential benefits of this could be.

I would really like to hear from people who have a frenchie that got the pallet reduction

:welcome3: to FBN

I have had two procedures for Cheli... one was at 10 months old and the other was at age 2. He had difficulty breathing and was suffering from sleep apenea which caused the second procedure. How old is Charlie?

:smileywelcome: to you and Charlie! We had pallet clips done on 2 English Bulldogs. The surgery helped both of them. We had laser surgery done because it was easier on them--less blood loss, faster recoup.

Charlie is 15mo old. Would it help with his Gaulping of food? He swallows it whole and then throws up

I don't know if it would help with gulping food, I doubt that it would. They have bowls that are designed to slow down eating; I have never used one. You could give him small amounts in his bowl, like a tablespoon at a time until he has eaten his normal portion.

Well... we are getting better. We tried one slow eater and now have a different one. They are helpful I think. The one in the pic is the new one. And it REALLY slowed him down.

I wish I had my dog's palate done when I had him fixed-I didn't know about it sadly until I had a different vet in the practice a year later and he reccomended it-we went ahead with it then to help with energy level for walking, breathing, snoring, gas, and safety- the surgeon described it as they can't get adequate air in but worse get the CO2 out. It was a bit rough on the recovery end but after about 1 month to 6 weeks we were back to normal.

So we returned all the slow feeders and this method has STOPED the pukeing after eating! He still tries to gulp his food but he is able to keep it down.

He was throwing up 3x after each meal. Thanks for the help.

Oh no.... Was pleased to hear the raised feeder helped but now I see you're at the vet. Hope he's doing ok.

Sending prayers; my pup has megaesophagus and elongated pallet as well as corkscrew tail T_T She is going in for surgery on Wednesday for the tail, which for the life of me I cannot keep clean enough to keep from irritating her. I'm considering having her pallet reduced too but she is so small, I'm very nervous about the healing process. Best of wishes for your little baby!

Well. Everything is back to normal. He is using the raised feeder from above. He had a major case of Giardia. It was causing all the problems and the soft pallet reduction (the anesthesia) made it way worse apparently.

He's back on dry food and eating 3/4 cup 2x a day. Now to tackle the allergies!
