I was wondering if anyone else has any experience with small Frenchies and spaying?

I'm really debating whether to have Ella spayed or not. I have my questions about what a difference it really makes, and the experiences I've had with spaying or neutering animals haven't really ended well. The males turned out okay, but the females we've had spayed got cancer anyway (we rescued rabbits for years - I know rabbits and dogs are very different, but they also have problems with anesthesia, and one of them started bleeding after surgery so we've had some glorious excursions late night with vets!).

After watching the video below, I just don't know if it's the right decision right now. Plus Ell is tiny (14 -17 pounds - she was the runt) and I dread them having to knock her out.

Our 6 month old 15.5 pound Frenchie had hernia repair surgery and spay 13 days ago and is doing amazing. I will say our vet has a lot of experience with the Frenchie and Engligh Bulldogs so I felt completely comfortable with our decision.

I know there are several people who say to wait (I wish we could have waited longer) and some who swear they never will spay. Everyone is different in their outlook on this and for good reasons why. We had planned eventual spay regardless so when her hernia needed repaired we choose to only put her through surgery once.

Best of luck in your decision and this is a good forum to get answers from some experienced Frenchie owners (we are still new to the Frenchie breed).

My girl is 2 1/2 years old and still intact. I will not spay her, however most frenchies are sold on a non- breeding contract, so if you have to get her spayed, I suggest waiting as long as possible. If you do decide to keep her intact it is essential that you are very responsible about it, keep detailed track of her cycles and keep her away from other dogs when needed. I dont find the bleeding to be a big mess to clean, you can even get doggie diapers for when she is in heat.
Again, owning an intact pet requires a lot of responsibility, but the fact that you are researching this whole topic makes you seem like you are ;)

Thank you guys for the kind responses - everywhere I go vets and animal people are usually pounding me over the head with "no you have to get her spayed!" And yes, MaplesMommy, I have done a lot of research, lol. I know I worry too much but she's my baby. However if you have any advice on the whole first heat thing - I've never had a female dog before so I'd love any input! And as far as other dogs go, I usually ask if they're fixed before Ella hangs out with anyone.
