Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anybody has any experience with letting their frenchies swim. I recently bought mine a life jacket as I know he is not buoyant enough to swim without it.

Thanks!

Yep, we have a life jacket too. Hudson loves the water and does well with the jacket. Because of the way he's built in pretty sure he could swim but we don't want to risk it!

Radar swims without a life jacket but that's only because he chases other dogs into the ocean at the beach and has no choice when the waves come in. He likes to go into the water to cool off but not for a swim, per se. I think the salt water adds buoyancy so I haven't had to rescue him, he's also not quite as dense as most other frenchies.

Jake went in our pool one time. He was terrified. He is definitely not a water dog.

Some love it and some don't, but I would definitely use a life jacket.

Buster likes to go wading but I don't let him go deeper than his belly!

It is not possible for me to tell you how much Cheli HATES water.... we even have trouble getting him out for potty when it is raining

Poor Jake! He does look terrified. lol!

Wally can swim but he hasn't tried to swim for too long so I'm not sure if he would eventually sink or not. His head is so big I would think he would sink but he's got long legs. I'm not around water on a regular basis so I haven't bothered getting him a life jacket.

I don't have a pool, but I let Q swim once at a friends house while I held her harness. She definitely was a natural but unfortunately couldn't stay above water. I put her on a raft and stayed within arms reach and she seemed to enjoy it. She would balance herself and watch the water on her feet. Unfortunately we haven't been out to dad's or my boat yet, but I'll be in the market for a life jacket soon enough.

Here is Gracen Roo wearing her life jacket. We were at the lake every weekend for 4 years straight. Because of her seizures she was clumsy and could fall in even if you were within arms reach. Thank goodness for that handle on the top and adrenaline otherwise I would have never gotten her out.

XoXo from Quella La Roux and her mommy too!

I took Gidget to the Cowpasture River 2 (?) summers ago - with life jacket. She HATED it. Wilson and Olivia have been wading in the Roanoke River when we go on walks. Olivia seems a little braver than Wilson when it comes to going in deeper. We just got kayaks and I plan on taking them to the reservoir in town and paddling with them sometime this summer. One at a time though!!!

We haven't tried swimming yet but your little monkeys seem to have fun while doing it(at least the ones that do :) ). I hope we have an opportunity to try it with Pepper, too.
About the fact that they are not buoyant, it is not entirely true. They are buoyant, like any living thing filled with air, but they are buoyant in a wrong way, so to speak. They are top heavy(broad chest and shoulders and narrow waist). This is also what happens when the melting ice on the submerged part of an iceberg causes the relationship between the berg's center of buoyancy and center of gravity to change: when the iceberg becomes "top-heavy" it rolls over so the center of buoyancy is once again above the center of gravity.
And so our monkeys too, when in water, could topple over. They would float but with their head submerged.Physics...can't fight it...so buy a life jacket ;)

I haven't tried, but my in laws have a 3-9ft pool. Going to take both of them swimming (with my husband and I both having one of them each)... They both love baths... I'm actually glad we don't have a pool here, I'd be petrified they would just jump right in!

Bisou absolutely loves anything having to do with water - be it the hose, sprinklers, rain puddles, baths and showers, the ocean, anything! We took her to the beach once without a life jacket and just hovered very close to her. She'd bound into the water with no regard for her own abilities and my fiance had to guide her by holding her harness. She'd paddle and choose where she wanted to go, but he'd provide the extra support in making sure she didn't sink. She could get a good 2-3 feet before her back end slowly started to sink and her head would have followed suit! Bisou loves playing dress-up and was great with me putting the vest on her, but she didn't like the bulkiness of it and would just sit down. It wasn't until we got to the beach that she totally forgot about this big foam thing on her back and went for it and LOVED it. We even got a toddler rash guard for her to minimize any chaffing that may happen.

No really good swimming pics but Fish lived up to his name and had a great afternoon with his girlfriend (chocolate lab) tootsie.

Anyone have the outward bound life jacket?
And if so, what size do you have and how big is your Frenchie?

Not sure if it's the same as what you're talking about but we have the Kyjen outward hound one. As a puppy H wore a small, now at 26 pounds (he's pretty slim though, all muscle and not boxy) he's a medium. They're pretty adjustable.
