Dogs face swollen, it has happened a few times, I’m pretty sure it’s an allergic reaction but I’m struggling to find out what it is he’s allergic to

Definitely...allergic reaction. You can give regular Benedryl... 1mg per pound up to 3x a day.

Where do you live? Is it allergy season, environmental are the worst to address because there is not much to do. Wipe face and paws are being outside with a cool cloth to remove the pollen, etc.

What are you feeding.. brand and protein

Agree...looks like allergic reaction. Could he have been bit by a bug or gotten into something?

I live in England and it’s winter at the moment. The food we feed him is Harrington’s but we always get different flavours like Lamb, Chicken, Beef etc however today I’ve been out and got some new food. I’ve bought Eukanuba weight control biscuits for small dogs, chicken is the source of protein for those, I also bought some raw food as I’m thinking about changing him to a raw diet. The raw food I got is natures menu country hunter 80% duck nuggets, on the site it said these nuggets are a complete meal. I also bought some natures menu natural raw 100% beef mince which id have to feed with other foods. I’ve given him some Benadryl and the swelling has started to go down

Ok... raw is best. Lose the Eukanuba, chicken is common issue for bulldogs, I think it has to due with how it is processed.. and Eukanuba is not a good food .

Since it is so local, face only, I think Citty is on to something with a bug bite.

Keep up the benedryl for a couple days until swelling is gone and watch for any other reactions. Stick with one protein at a time so you can see any changes. Duck is great since it has the least amount of allergy reaction, turkey and rabbit are the next best

Thanks for the info! He has had swelling before a few times and this time he got some hives on his body too, would this happen with a bug bite?

What’s the best way to go about preventing it? I bought some antiseptic skincare spray, do you think it’d be a good idea to wipe him over with this each time he goes outside? I also find it strange that it’s only started in the past 6 months and I’ve had him since 2014 and before recently he never had an allergic reaction

Allergies can show up at anytime... you can wipe him with just a cool colts after each outside time. I do it with my Bulldog, he is allergic to everything green.. trees, grass , bushes etc

Thanks for helping really appreciate it. Does wiping over prevent yours from swelling then? Think what I’m going to do is change to the raw duck chunks and wipe him over everytime he goes outside and see where that leads us

Yes, wiping, we feed raw duck, turkey and rabbit rotation and in spring/summer he get a Cytopoint shot every 8 weeks

So far he’s been alright, really likes the raw food, looking and behaving a lot healthier already and no sign of any swelling so far. Been trying to keep him away from the plants in the garden as well as wiping his face over often with some wet kitchen roll. So far so good

Also just a quick question, I’m pretty sure it’s normal as he’s always had them but this is nothing to do with his allergies is it, the slight little lumps above the eyes, sort of like eye brows

Yes, normal.

Good update... happy to hear he is getting better and the raw food is helping

His eye has just started swelling a bit right now, given him some Benadryl already. No idea what it could be causing it at this point

It could be something environmental... dust, dryer sheets, detergent... can you think of anything that changed recently
