Titer testing

Taking both my pups to the vet tomorrow for annual exam and was doing a little research. I have done titer tests on previous dogs as they got older, but am requesting them for both of my dogs at age 1 and 2. I don't want to over vaccinate my dogs. Apparently some of the core vaccines can last 7 - 9 years or an entire lifetime! Here is a link to an article that I thought was informative on the topic.

Wohoo you are awesome for doing your research & deciding to go with the titer!

I had Maple titered a couple months ago and she showed a high level of antibodies even though she only received 2 puppy rounds. Even that was enough

Unfortunately I am seeing quite a few dogs suffering from vaccinosis or other vaccine-related preventable illnesses.

Thanks! I don't want to vaccinate unnecessarily. My breeder also warned against the intra-nasal bortedella because she felt that it was causing chronic sinusitis in some of her pups.

I'm hoping to do this with Hudson too. Do you mind sharing how much it costs at your vet? I'm curious about the whole thing! Is it for rabies too or is that different?

Since you are in Canada can you let me know much this test costs? Prices are so different south of the border. I refused to give my dogs all the vaccines they planned on giving but I would like to do this test to ensure they are fine.

I paid 40$ together with the 70$ annual exam. If u just went in for the titer only its 60$ I believe.And thats for Distemper,Parvo and Hepatitis (really the only ones u wanna test for). For a little extra fee u can test for others diseases as well also rabies.

I find my vet is on the high side for most everything, but the titer test for distemper and parvo was $132.00. It is worth it to me to not over vaccinate him. I will find out the results tomorrow and if all is fine we won't do the test again for 3 years.

Good info, I have been reading up on this and getting more research. I think it's a good idea to do the titer testing.

Jax will be 2 in April. He goes for a wellness exam on Monday. He has had all vaccinations recommended to date but I just checked with the daycare he attend on their policy for titer testing and they said they accept it as long as they have documentation from the vet stating his levels are high enough to cover the vaccine requirements!
