Too skinny? Are we not feeding her enough with her new raw diet?

Hi everyone,

Our girl is turning 6 months in 6 days - yay! We have been feeding her raw (turkey) from Naturawls for about a week now and she has lost some weight. She was the runt of the litter and was absolutely tiny. A couple of weeks ago (before starting raw) we weighed her and she was the whooping 13.1lbs, however she is currently 11.4lbs. I would have never thought she lost any weight if it wasn't for the scale as she is so much happier, gobbles down her meals (we had to entice her to eat Acana), her coat is shinier, she is full of energy AND doesn't really look any skinnier to us.

We feed her 1/2lb a day (split in three portions) and also give her fish oil and coconut oil. She also has a fair amount of treats (liver, hearts, dried fish) daily. I will try fattier proteins for the next few weeks to see if anything changes.

Should we try to fatten her up with some quinoa, sweet potato or yoghurt? Does she seem too slim to you?

Thought its fitting to take a few pictures of her as she gobbles down her dinner.

I don't think she looks skinny, but you do want her gaining weight at this age - two pounds down is a lot. I would just up her intake of the raw a little bit. My older dog has always needed more than the suggested amount to keep weight on him, and my little one is a porker, so all dogs are different - your pup might just need a little extra.

She is adorable! I'd try giving her some quinoa or sweet potato with her meat!

Puppies can get about 6- 7% of their weight in food daily, so 7% of 13 pounds is about 0.9 pounds a day. Maybe try 1/4 pound each meal for two meals and 1/3 pound for third meal and cut back if she gets loose stools

She's still young, they usually look a bit thin at that age. I think she looks good! You can tell especially from looking down she's just right. She's technically a teenager so she will fill out especially after she turns 1 years old.

Thanks everyone for all the kind, helpful responses!!

I feel like such an idiot right now, it turns out our fancy scale was actually playing tricks on me! We measured her again on an old fashioned scale and it turns out that shes actually gained weight! 14.3lb yay!

No need to feel bad -- it was a good outcome, a relief I'm sure. Glad your cute little girl is doing so well.

That's great!!! Makes total sense why she didn't look skinny. :)

Phew, thanks ladies! Yes, such a relief!
