Hi all,

Our Frenchie Frank comes home mid-May and we're thinking about bringing in two puppies instead of one. We've gotten mixed feedback on online and from friends on this but nothing regarding frenchies in particular. Most say to get opposite sexes. Anyone have experience with this? Negative feedback has included: they will be co dependent on one another and not to you, will be harder to train, and cost. Pros include: they have a friend, less lonely during the day, and, of course, more cuteness.

Thoughts?

If you do get two... definitely do male/female chances are much higher they get along . Costs is always an issue with two but a playmate is a plus

The puppies tend to bond with each other instead of the owner. We have had better luck having 2 males instead of male & female because males seem to be more easy going. What it boils down to is the dogs' temperament! Having 2 pups is fun for them, and so cute to watch play but they feed off each other--what 1 doesn't think of doing the other will!

Something to remember is that house training a frenchie takes persistence and 2 at once will be even harder. But twice as much entertainment!

I only have one, but know people that have done both - added another Frenchie later; got two puppies at once.

It generally seems to have been much easier to add in a second puppy a year or so down the line, once the first has bonded with the owner, learned toilet training, leash walking, commands etc. The new pup seems to just learn from the first dog well, and it makes the training a bit easier.

The main thing that came into my head was cost. Having had Dexter spend a good chunck of his life in the vet dealing with allergies, and working our way through every type of food imaginable, two would have been a significant financial outlay if they both had the same issues. Which, of course, they may not.

I'm sure people will have happily managed with two pups though. It would be tough, but fun! And if you do go for two, you need to share many, many pictures with us of the double cuteness! :)

I say Frenchies are like potato chips, you can't have just one. :) Frenchies love having play mates, so it is always better to have at least two. I like male/female my self, I think they get along better. Cost isn't that much more really especially if you get a good bloodline that has great health.

I'm doing 3 puppies at once!
2 French Bulldogs & 1 English Bulldog,at the beginning was really hard but right now it's a piece of cake!!
I have them on schedule and they love and play with each other!

I have a young English bulldog and older French bulldog, both female, and it's interesting to see the difference between them. The young English dog is constantly rough housing with the Frenchie, which starts off pretty friendly, but occasionally the Frenchie will lose her patience and fight back in a more serious manner and I have to separate the two. The English bulldog is not as interested in chasing balls, but likes to hold one in its mouth. They both like to chew. The Frenchie is more solitary, whereas the British likes to interact more with the Frenchie and with me.

Thanks so much for the insight everyone! We're still debating it but we're leaning towards waiting a year and then getting a second little friend for Frank. We'll see!

Personally I would adjust to having one in the household and get it trained. When and if you get a second, it may be much easier to train the 2nd one because your older frenchie will help. I always opt for opoosite sex just to be on the safe side. We got Jake and he loved dogs so much we got a female 10 months later. She is a little snarky but he is pretty laid back so it works. I could never have two Stellas though!
