Why won't they tell us they have to GO?

Hi everyone! So my babies are 6 months old, and still struggling with house breaking.. We take them out every 3 hours when we are home. During the day when we are at work we keep them in x-pen and I come home at lunch and let them out, but they are still peeing in x-pen. We praise and treat them when they pee/poop outside (it is a PARTY), but they still want to go inside, and we watch them but there are no signs... they are playing 1 second then squat PEE the next. I have gone through and read several topics on here, and got some good ideas (we need to use better treats, like bacon or chicken!) but how long does it usually take to get potty trained? These are our first dogs so have no idea. LOL.. cats are much easier (we have 4 of those) I was hoping they would go to the door and bark, but they don't even go to the door when they have to go. I got the potty bells and tried to train them on those. I think they rang them twice, then back to potty on carpet. ARG. Please tell me this is a Frenchie thing, as my friends at work say their pups are already housebroken at 5-6 months (not Frenchies, but Poodles and Dobermans, German Shepherds) I had one person have the nerve to tell me that she read online that Frenchies aren't that smart, maybe that is why it is taking so long... I almost smacked that woman. LOL... this is the last frustrating thing for us, otherwise they are the loves of our lives!

Can you take them out every hour instead of every 3 hours? How long are they alone in the xpen? Do you have it too big? If they have too much room in there, that might be why they are going in there. It's not uncommon for a Frenchie to take longer to potty train than other dogs. Jax was trained at about 5 months but it was during summer and the kids were home from school. Just keep being consistent with taking them out and praising them. Eventually they will get it.

Not to scare you, just a reference... it took two full years to get Cheli 100% house trained... he would just look at us and squat... always pee never poo. Now at age 6 he still does not bark or go to door, he sits and stares until we ask 'gotta potty' and then he runs to the door

All are different... main thing is to stay consistent

Sorry, but I did give a little chuckle at the "he sits and stares" cause I got a mental image of his cute little face doing that. Oh, Cheli!!

Oh he's such a cutie! Jax does a sit and stare but not because he has to potty. Usually it's because he wants to sit where I'm sitting.

OMG look at that face, those eyes, those ears!! so cute :angelheart:

You've had good advice. What makes potty training easy for us is a big brother and a pet door! We have not had to potty train any of our Bulldogs!

By the way, tell the person who said Bulldogs are dumb that they are wrong. They are stubborn, self-centered, but not dumb. If they were dumb they couldn't get their people to do so much for them!

Bulldogs definitely are not dumb!! They know exactly what they doing.

That provides me with some comfort...this morning I discovered Maddy peed on her blanket in her crate. She's over a yr old now and haven't had any accident in the house (certainly not in her crate) for a long time. I always take her out to pee late at night before bedtime and no water after 8pm. All I can do is chock that up as a freak accident. I certainly hope it's not due to any health issue.

I remember reading (after getting Loki) that Frenchies tend to be slow in the house training department.

Loki has proven to be no exception.

We have a pet door that he freely goes in and out and a training pad outside that he uses; as well as his "usual spot" to go if no pad is on the ground.

He is doing fairly well, but seems to be lacking the inititave to go out through the door on his own to use the pad.

We still have a training pad in one location inside the house that he uses more often than we would like.

I guess the good news is that he uses the pad when inside as opposed to the floor.

We are preparing to go hard core and remove the pad and hope he will then only go outside.

Can't say I have a clue how this will work out.
