I have an 11 week old pup, and I was told not to take him outside to potty because he will get sick. I do not want him trained to potty inside because of the cold weather. I just need some other insight into this. Any information will help thanks.

By sick -- i don't think they mean cold. Most likely they mean he could contract parvo virus, and many other deadly diseases that run the risk of affecting dogs who are not fully vaccinated. At that age they don't have the antibodies to fight off those diseases. I kept the puppy in the house until his final round of shots at around 17 weeks. Didn't take any chances with that!

I definitely wouldn't take him where a lot of dogs frequent before he is fully vaccinated. Dog parks, the pet store, and things like that. If he has had a couple vaccines (which at that age he should) and he were my dog I would take him out to potty if I had a place where other dogs aren't around. That's just my opinion. Some people will disagree though. You have to think about your situation and make a decision based upon that.

I would take him out to your back yard or any place that doesnt see a lot of dogs.
I agree,he didnt mean a cold but rather Parvo and Distemper.
Maple only received two rounds of shots when she was a pup and she has perfect antibody levels. If you no longer want to wait you can get the puppy titer tested to see if he already has antibodies.
Also I started bringing Maple to places like the petstore or dinners we were invited to etc when she was still young. There is an important life stage you dont want to miss because its crucial to sociliaze and show them everything. However at the pet store and the vet and any other place sick dogs are likely I would pick the pup up and hold him.
This is just my opinion ;)

Thanks for the information, he would only be out in my yard with no other dogs. Even though we are working on the potty training bit, he will still poop in house.

I agree. If you have a backyard or an area that is not frequented by other dogs, then take him outside to potty and he should be fine. Potty training can take some time. Just make sure you stay consistent and take him outside frequently, after he plays, drinks, eats or if you see him sniffing around. And make sure you praise him or give him a treat every time he pees/poops outside so that he knows he did a good job.

It sounds like your yard is a safe place for him to go potty, but parvo can live in the ground for years! Most cement surfaces are safe also.

If it's super cold, then I would just let him use the puppy pads, until he gets about 5 months of age.
