Hi everyone,
I'm Brooke and I'm looking to purchase my first frenchie and have a question..

I have been in contact with a breeder about a puppy she has but after looking through some of her photos I noticed both the father and the "grandpa" are extremely wall eyed. I will attach a few pictures so you can see…

It's a bit hard to see in the small picture but if you can enlarge it you will see more what I'm talking about.

The pied frenchie is the pup's Dad and the fawn is the "Grandpa". He seems to of passed down his eyes to his son. Would this be a defect that would continue to be passed onto the puppies too? The Mom is also slightly wall eyed. I feel that it is a defect, would I be correct? Also, is it the sign of a poor breeder for that person to breed a frenchie who has an issue such as that? The breeder also is keeping the puppies in a swimming pool which I found a bit odd and it also appears they smoke in their house which I've heard is a big no-no with frenchies. I just have a gut feeling she may be more of a "backyard breeder".

Here is a picture of the puppy at 4 weeks old …

She appears as though her eyes could be going the same way (judging by the whites showing in the inner corner of her eyes). Her "grandpa" appeared normal from his pictures at 10 weeks and now looks quite…"off".

Spending as much as I am I want to be sure I'm making the right decision and thought that you all would be the perfect people to ask :) Thank you in advance, I am open to any and all opinions.:)

Smoking in the house is a big 'no-no' for anything and anyone. That raises major red flags for me, personally.

The condition of being wall-eyed can be treated especially if caught early. You'll need a specialist. Dependent upon where you live I can refer you to one. I don't see the eyes as being so wall-eyed as I see a little too much white for my taste. There are so many quality French Bulldog Breeders out there. I had a difficult time finding a puppy when I was looking but since I purchased him and started following people on FB I have found so many. Frenchies are expensive so I say get the best dog you can for the $> I wouldn't pay several thousand dollars for obvious faults. But, that's just me :)

I would go with your gut feeling and say NO!
Smoking inside the house is a no no for me and I would not buy my pup from a place where people constantly smoke. It cant be healthy.
Also yes you are correct! A good breeder would only breed with a dam and a sire that are healthy and meet the breeds standard.
I think it is very odd that the 'breeder' is keeping the pups in a swimming pool. A good breeder has the pups in a whelping box inside a clean room(smoke free too),or a play pen and it is important that the pups have the chance to get familiar with every day noise and activity and this is only possible if the pups are inside and live with you and your family.

If the person lives within driving distance I would definitely go check them out in person before purchasing the pup. Look at everything and ask lots of questions!

Puppies are usually wall eyed for several weeks after birth. They usually start to focus more after 6 weeks. In photos, the flash of the camera will also make a pup appear wall eyed even if it's not. Keeping pups in a swimming pool is pretty common, they are easy to clean and disinfect and give them plenty of room to play. I have a whelping box and 2 pools for just one litter so I have plenty of space to move them from a messy bed to a clean bed and keep their linens clean at all times. Clean beds, happy me and happy pups! Pools IMO are way better than cages!!! I even make them a den so they have a nice covered area while they are small enough not to take it down.

Having said that, breeding wall eyed Frenchies and smoking in the house where the pups are? NO WAY!! RUN!!!! IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!!!

Here is a pic of a nice cozy pool bed:

Also, here is a picture of a puppy (with flash) that makes a puppy appear wall eyed. Difference between 4 weeks and 5 weeks is quite huge in eye focus abilities.

That can be passed down to the pups, and it sounds like this breeder is not breeding for the good of the breed and there is no way I would buy from them. can you say "puppy mill??" If you are thinking of breeding, then find a good reputable breeder that shows their Frenchies and has champions and grand champions. Never settle for less.

I would not buy from a breeder that bred dogs with faults and smoked in the house. There are good, responsible breeders out there that need our support!
