Alright, so I know these French Bulldogs, are stubborn little things....

Rico is not only my first French Bulldog, but also my first dog. He is couple of days short of being 7 months old... I've very successfully managed to house train him and also to have him use a soft mouth when playing with humans.

I've had a lot of patience in the leash training department, put a lot of work into it, and it seems as though there is little to no progress.

He is absolutely all over the place, he is a habitual sniffer... left to right, as though he's scanning everything, and he has tunnel vision... it means nothing to him that I am there and he's on a leash. I really think he doesn't think he's on a leash at all to be honest. I use a short leash, and a good sturdy harness (ruffwear front range, but attached to the leash on top) see photo for reference.

Now, normally I would just deal with the frustration but recently he's done something that has me really concerned about the urgency in which he needs to be really leash trained.....

Usually after he poops he likes to flee the scene with lightening speed... so I know, that I need to hold on tight to his leash after a poop because he's gonna bolt. Combine this with getting a poop bag ready, and you know you need to be on high alert when the poop happens. During his first morning walk a week or so ago, he was pooping and noticed some birds... he finished pooping and bolted with such force and speed that he got the leash out of my hand and ran!

Now, I live in NYC with lots of traffic and activity at all hours.... THANK GOODNESS, he stopped to smell something, or else I could have definitely lost him or he could have gotten really hurt.

He's not super treat motivated, I've tried endlessly praising and treating him for good leash behavior... I've lured him with treats to walk a certain way (does not work, he just sits and stares at me as if he's saying bring it to me).

I've noticed he actually walks better on a collar than a harness, contrary to what is usually the case... but he's not even nearly leash trained enough to make me feel comfortable using only a collar, I fear that he will hurt his trachea with his pulling on a collar only.

I used to be amazed when I saw dogs in NYC walking off leash, and I always admired how well dogs walk in the city on a leash... now they just disgust me, I'm jealous hahahaha.

Please tell me it will eventually just "click" and if so, when should I expect that? Is there something else I should be trying? I can't imagine obedience school doing it any different than I've already done and continue to do...

He has to get this leash behavior down ASAP! if he were better on a leash I could do so much more with him, and go so many more places!

Helllllllp!!

Again, Cheli is exactly the same--- I bought a leash that i can wrap around my waist to keep him in place. I tried everything short of brining a trainer in.

Do you know what this will look like?! I'll have a dog that appears to be doing parkour or bungee jumping down the street. Hahahaha. I'm literally laughing out loud.

Charge for entertainment... you'll never work again

Please.... I argue with him every time we leave the dog park... "why aren't you famous like your friends are on instagram, I could work for you full time like oscars dad if you were famous" hahahaha

Ya know, that is different-- they must have changed it... my leash is not bungee like, it is flat.

Check the sight my be there somewhere

Have you ever done a face plant? Buster is a sniffer of everything, also. Fortunately he doesn't bolt after pooping, he scratches to spread his scent, but he does bolt when he sees people and/or dogs! If I'm not on guard he can pull me down!

No face plant... yet. :D

I've tried EVERYTHING with Wally and he's a still a pretty shitty walker. He's not mean aggressive, but he is crazy. He loves treats but when he's outside I could wave a steak in front of his face and he'll ignore it. I have learned to live with it.

I have the same Ruffwear harness for Maddy. She is highly motivated by food/treat. When we're in a calm surrounding she'll walk next to me and not pulling (still sniff a little). But once we're in a park or places with alot of stimulation, she'll start pulling and stiff EVERYTHING! I can get her attention by talking in a super excited voice and luring/giving her treat, but once she takes the treat, she goes back doing the same thing. It gets frustrating for sure.

From what I've read, dogs tend to be more obedient with leash walking after they've gotten all their excitement and energy out, ie play with them ahead of time before walk. But that's not always possible when I have a schedule to keep.

I agree I have seen a marked improvement in his walking when he's exhausted.... but I wish he were still better ughhh

haha Poppy is a poop-bolter too. I'm not sure if that's a thing you can train them out of really...seems like a compulsion like some dogs wiping their feet after their done. I've just got to make sure I've got a firm handle on the leash and warn anyone who may be walking her. I don't pull out the poop bag until she's done to ensure she doesn't catch me off guard.

As for the sniffing/distracted pulling/focusing thing...I actually kind of fixed this by accident? She doesn't pull unless she's really focused on something...one time my boyfriend thought it would be funny to see what would happen if he touched her back as she clearly was focused on something else...and she jumped out of her skin and gave him a reproachful look - but also stopped pulling and listened to us per usual. Since then we've just been touching her if she gets super focused on something and it snaps her back to reality (she doesn't jump anymore, just stops pulling and starts looking back to us for instruction).

Now obviously this isn't going to work for every dog...or even most dogs..but as far bringing my dog's attention back to me during walks this is what works for me.
