Hi everyone,

Bandido is 17 months and he is scheduled this Friday for BOAS surgery. He is very active and has no problem exercising, but he has reflux due to a very tiny haital hernia (detected on a fluoroscopy).

The vet suggested that if they perform BOAS, there will be less stress in his esophagus and the hernia will fix on its own most likely.

The vet has experience with brachy breeds ( she owns 3 French Bulldogs, and she was recommended by the bulldog community here). The surgery will be performed by a board certified surgeon that works with her.

We were asked if we wanted to neuter him, and I have a dilemma here. We were planning to wait until he is 2 years old. He has his moments, specially lately ๐Ÿ˜…โค๏ธ (He is a little bit more territorial lately) but everything so far we were able to solve with trainning (at the end he is always eager to please).

But, doing this later, implies putting him through anesthesia and surgery experience all over again.

What do you think it might be best for him? Fix home now when they perform the BOAS surgery, or wait and do it later?

Thank you so much ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Most good reputable vets will make a determination during the surgery if they should do all at once, based on how long the procedure is taking. Our vet will schedule it, but pull back if he sees they are under too long.

Ask if they will monitor and if you are comfortable and trust them... that information will help your decision

Thank you so much from your prompt response! Itโ€™s actually very good to know, itโ€™s aligned with what the vet said as well.

Do you think that there is a benefit (if time allows) of doing everything together? Or would waiting until he is 2 to neuter be better?

Is there a benefit to neuter after 2 instead of 17 months?

Neutering age is a personal choice, but anything over 18 months is good time

Agree with 2bullymama.

Iโ€™m gonna wait a few more months to do it and he will be for sure 18+. Friday will just be BOAS.

And thank Cbrugs and 2bullymama for the replies here and throughout all the forum! All posts here have been so useful and valuable to us!

My pup, at age one year had both surgeries done and I was happy that we did no put him under again. Knowing this the incidence of death under an anesthetic are 1 in 15,000 so very minimal risk one should know according to the surgeon who is a bull dog specialist. T
