Hi All!
I have a two year old male named Buddy with chronic diarrhea. He has had two bouts with pancreatitis and some general itchiness but otherwise has no other health issues. He has had this diarrhea after the second bout of pancreatitis several months ago and we can't get rid of it.

We have tried several rounds of antibiotics, peptic ulcer meds, probiotics and is still on Pepcid. We have moved to feeding him only chicken and rice with yogurt (for the probiotic cultures) and the diarrhea persists. He had an ultrasound this morning and everything was normal.

Buddy doesn't seem to be bothered by it as he is happy and rambunctious!

I wonder if he may have a food allergy (which might also be causing the itchiness). Does anyone have any experience with ruling out foods for an allergy?

Any suggestions or advice are appreciated!
THANKS! Buddy thanks you too!

If his ultrasound is normal, it just shows that he doesn't have gallstones which can cause pancreatitis. The main way of monitoring pancreatitis is amylase or lipase levels when you do bloodwork. Are the amylase levels back to normal?

I would suggest keeping him on a low fat ( <=10% calories from fat ) low allergy diet to prevent pancreatitis again, eg annamaet grain free lean low fat formula. Best Low Fat Dog Foods | Dog Food Advisor .

Other diagnoses could include inflammatory bowel disease, giardia but your vet probably ruled that out. You may want to try a highly rated probiotic like Primal Defense, Vetri Science Mega Probiotic, Probiotic Miracle.

My female bulldog Banks, was allergic to chicken and she would get hives and diarrhea.

Have you thought about doing a blood screen allergy test? It is not 100% accurate but gives good baseline of what to avoid.

We had 2 of our 6 English Bulldogs tested for food allergies. It really helped narrow down the food choices. There are some false positives with this blood screening, but I would do it again. We feed Natures Variety Instinct Limited Ingredient Turkey and have nice "Tootsie-Rolls" instead of "Dairy Queen"!

Many will advise that you run some kind of allergy panel. However, anyone with a bit of knowledge in immunology will tell you that such panels are rarely helpful—if at all—with food sensitivities. All you get is a laundry list of food to worry about, which has little to do with what's going on in your dog's body.

Chicken and its derivatives being such a common offender, I would simply suggest to you switch your dog to a 100% chicken-free diet for at least 3 weeks and see how that works.
