Hi everyone,

Our 5 months old girl, Kara, has been waking up at 5:30AM every morning to do both number 1 and 2. She used to wake up at 3AM when we first got her but for the last month and a half she has been stuck with her 5:30AM. She has her dinner between 6PM and 6:30PM, followed by a long walk then a potty break right before bed around 10:30PM (only pees). She never has accidents inside. We leave her crate door open at night and like an alarm clock, she comes to us at 5:30AM, does her business and then goes back to sleep, waiting for us to wake her up in the morning. I don't know if we are doing something wrong, i.e. feeding her dinner too early or perhaps not locking her crate?

I've seen a general rule of thumb that a puppy can hold their urine about one hour for every month of age (and maybe an extra hour in a pinch). For Kara that would be 5-6 hours, so if she's holding it from 10:30 to 5:30 she's really doing pretty well. My 11 month old generally sleeps at least 8 to 9 hours through the night without waking or needing to go out so it does get better with age.

Congrats on Kara holding it that long at night at her young age and not having accidents! She sounds like a super smart girl - especially when she could sneak out of her crate and go poop somewhere for you to find later! It sucks about the 5:30 am thing. She's got a good internal clock and she's a good girl for knowing to wake you up. I would have to agree with others that as she gets older, she may not wake so early. Hang in there a bit longer!

Thanks everyone! She's a very good, smart little girl.
I remember reading that their bladders are fully developed by 5/6 months and therefore was wondering what is going on with the 5:30AM wake ups. Unfortunately, we live in an apartment and the only way for her to go potty is to wake us up. If we only we had a garden. Ah!

Oh goodness. She's a cutie. And now I feel for you more knowing that you have to actually go through a whole thing to get her outside at 5 am. Hopefully just a while longer...

Just be thankful that she goes back to sleep.

Gracie is 5 months and can hold it all night, but when she's awake and playing, she goes constantly and still has accidents frequently. It's really our fault because she will ask to go out fairly often, so we think she has it down and get slack about taking her on a schedule. Especially, now, since she can go down the deck steps by herself.

Jake is 5 months old now and I get up at 5-ish to let him out. We goto bed around 9 pm. He does do number 1 and 2 before bed. He sleeps in his crate but I find that lately I am waking him up for the 5am trip outside.

Need to start letting him sleep and see how long he can make it. I typically get up at 6am for work so his schedule isn't terrible for me.

Thanks! She is well worth the 5AM potty breaks but we are crossing our fingers hard it ends soon. Haha

If only we can mix and match what Kara and Gracie have learned. I am grateful that she doesn't have any accidents at home and the carpet could go back in the living room but would for sure love have her sleep through the night like your girl!

poley02 it is the anticipation, we always anticipate the 5:30AM wake ups too!

I had two Frenchies. One had to go out at about 6am from the time he was young until he was 13. The other one could sleep in until 10am before he had to go out. In my case, it depended on the dog.
