Back pain

Unfortunately my Leo has started having pain issues that I and the vet believes to be back and/ or neck related. It just started a couple of days ago, so trying to see if Deramaxx and Methocarbamol will help.... so far it doesn’t seem to help much.

I feel so helpless and sick to my stomach to see him in such pain.

Ugh!!!

Crate rest, crate rest, crate rest. Put him on crate rest for at least 6 weeks. Gabapentin is a common pain med for IVDD. Don’t let him run, jump or go up and down stairs. Sometimes they can recover from just crate rest and meds if it’s not a severe issue. If at any time he starts to lose feeling in his back legs, get him in ASAP. With IVDD, time can be crucial.

Thank you Citty - right now he is being treated for pain with Deramaxx and Methocarbamol. He has an appetite thankfully, but I have to feed him by hand. Gawd, I hope he is not in this much pain for SIX WEEKS! :( I wonder if I should be getting x-rays and/or ultrasounds or something...... I'm at a loss....

Agree with Citty... crate rest, Gabapentin and laser therapy!

Hi Christine - what type of laser therapy?

Our vet uses cold laser therapy, Cheli goes once a month and we see a difference if we are late I going.

Companion Laser Therapy.... if your vet does not offer, see if another in your area does. It relieves the inflammation

Is there a difference between cold laser and companion laser therapy? What issue(s) does Chelios have that he has to have it once a month?

Crate rest can prevent him from being in pain. It’s possible something is just inflamed so strict crate rest can help the inflammation go down. Jax also gets acupuncture once a month and laser as well. You don’t necessarily need xrays at this point. I would see how he does with the meds and crate rest. If he worsens, I would see a neurologist.

Cheli has fused vertebrae, the two I mentioned are the same.. Companion is the maker of the devices.

A neurologist!?? Oh my...

They specialize in these kinds of issues. When Jax has a flare up, I just go straight to his neurologist instead of the regular vet.

I am sorry to hear about the troubles Gaston is having. I had a Frenchie with IVDD (I believe he was also about 5 at the time) that had surgery for the issue and afterwards had no noticeable deterioration of quality of life. He was quite active and would go on walks and played as if nothing had happened. I was just very careful about how he was picked up afterwards( putting no pressure on spine) and tried (not always successfully) to limit his jumping on and off of furniture. I wish you the best of luck with Gaston.
