Hi Bob's mom here. I'm wondering if anyone has had any issues with their intact males prostate. Bob about 9 days ago seemed like he was having trouble urinating. We took him to the vet 8 days ago and they did an ultrasound. They said enlarged prostate. The vet wasn't his normal vet and immediately said "get him fixed". Then sent us on our way. I was upset because I looked up more things online and talked to another Frenchie owner and there are other things you can do more naturally than him going into surgery. Surgery makes me so nervous. So I called the next day and asked if there was anything else we could do. She prescribed him a blood pressure med and an antibiotic. I also bought him saw palmetto mixed with nettle (?). The antibiotics were done Monday. Now he's been up every 20-30 minutes trying to pee. He's in pain now. And he vomited about an hour ago. The vet opens in 45 minutes and I'm calling the second they open. Can anyone give me any advice as to what to say to his vets office?

Also, I'm thinking it might be an infection causing it? I mean, less than 24 hours after the antibiotics stopped, his condition got worse.

Sorry you are going through this. I do t have any experience with this but did he get tested for stones? Sometimes stones can cause trouble urinating among other issues.

While surgery can be scary, a neuter really isn’t a big deal as long as the vet is familiar with the breed. I’m all for natural remedies in some instances, but for something like this, I would probably go forward with the neuter. But you should definitely get a second opinion and maybe see your regular vet.

I am sorry Bob is in pain. Unless you are planning to breed him I would get him neutered. If there is an infection you should probably wait until it is cleared up before surgery.

I agree.

If Bob has prostatitis he will need antibiotics for about 4 weeks. If he is fully grown ( over 12 months ) enrofloxacin at a dosage of 5 mg/kg, bid, orally is a good empiric treatment choice while awaiting results of microbiologic testing from urine or prostatic massage. If he's not fully grown other antibiotics that can be used include erythromycin, clindamycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole .Once infection is all cleared up he should be neutered.

agree.... with the gang... you should prceed with the neuter.

Sending lots of positive thoughts
