Penny's four months this week and doesn't have any odor yet just wanted to get some advice on when I shoud start brushing, which items I should use like toothpaste or to give treats, and how often. Thanks Frenchie lovers!:D

i started henry at 10 weeks old. i brush his teeth with a finger brush and some peanut butter flavored dog toothpaste. he loves it, i do it once a week or so.

I use Nylabone brand toothpaste and brush. I try to brush Jax's teeth once a week but sometimes I go longer. It might be good to start with a finger brush and then either stay with that or move up to a small headed brush. He loves to get his teefers brushed, probably more so because of the flavored paste.

I also use a finger brush with Nylabone toothpaste. Both my dogs love getting their teeth brushed. We do it twice a week.

Good info. I really need to start teeth brushing. Glad they seem to like it, that's very encouraging. Now that Gus is older (almost 4 mos) he's not keen on having his nails trimmed, so I just bought an electric file and we've just started putting pedicures into the routine. I need to add tooth brushing to the list, I've been negligent. :ashamed:

I "try" to do it every night with limited success. Carrot loves the peanut butter flavored toothpaste, but refuses to open her mouth. So it's always a but of a wrestling match. Despite the brushing, I've noticed plaque (sp?) on her back molars. Has anyone had their frenchies teeth cleaned? Do they need to be put under?

My friend had a frenchie and had to put her baby under for a teeth clean. Just be a sure to go to a vet that is familiar with brachycephalic breeds :D

our babies are the same age! ive been to scared to use the electric filer on her myself so i've been taking her to the groomers for it. What brand do you use?

You can give raw frozen marrow bones or other raw meaty bones which is like nature's toothbrush and floss. It's good for their teeth and helps control tartar.

I've never tried to brush Bambi's teeth. Does it really work? I tried it various times with Ginger but she doesn't like to be messed with in any way. It was chicken flavor toothpaste (yuck).

Some places will clean the teeth without being put under if there is not a lot of plaque built up but to get a thorough cleaning it's best for them to be under. I just had Jake's teeth cleaned when he had his nares done recently and it was the first time (he's 4 years old)

This is the brand I bought, but other members might have more experience with this. Seemed to work perfectly fine, but I've only used it the one time.

I used to just get my previous dogs' nails done at the groomer, but since Frenchies have low maintenance coats, I was planning on just doing everything myself. Also, he's been vomiting in the car, and I'm fairly certain that it's turned into a nervous thing. The only place we've been, so far, is the vet. I didn't want to put him in the car only to take him to another place of torture.

I bought some bacon jerky especially for this task and enlisted a helper to hold him still. Wasn't too bad. I'm sure with practice he will tolerate it. Although, he hates HATES being restrained.

(Sorry for hijacking the thread)

I give Emmy a raw soup bone and she goes to town on it and it keeps her teeth clean. She is also fed a raw diet.

I brush Maddy's teeth every night. But I use put the toothpaste on a piece of gauze. Maddy keeps moving her head when I brush, so when I was using puppy toothbrush, it would cause some bleeding (maybe I was brushing too hard?). The bristle on the finger brush looks really stiff. Is it actually good to use? Maybe I'll try that.

Our vet cleans the dogs' teeth as needed. They both are strong chewers so nylabones help keep their smile bright!
